Hi folks, looking for a bit of advice. I'm off to Twickenham this weekend. I have to take the quickest route down on the Saturday morning, so that probably means bring M-way all the way. I was hoping to be able to take a leisurely (and more fun) route back on Sunday, but now I find I need to be back in Stockport for early afternoon. Any advice on routes to take (there and/or back) that could involve a bit of interesting driving without sacrificing the need to get there within certain time limits (I'm looking at 4.5 - 5 hours max). Or should I just look forward to the rugby and forget about having a bit of fun on the drive?

You can't have your cake and eat it.

M40 sounds the best bet. You could try the B4100 which was
the main road Bicester-Banbury-Warwick.

I've often wondered about that saying: what's the point of having the cake, then?

Thanks, I'll look into it. Given the state of the M6 from W'hampton to Cheshire, is worth avoiding that by taking one of the parallel A roads?

How about taking the A1 up to Worksop and taking the A57 across to Sheffield, then continue across the hills & bends of the A57 (Snake Pass) to Glossop and then on to Stockport via the A626 or M67/M60 - shouldn't take more than 2.5 hours to get up the A1 and then it's less than 1 hour to Stockport on the A57 and a couple of short blast (less than 5 miles) on a couple of motorways).

Sounds good. Any idea what the M25 from Feltham area to the A1 is like - or is likely to be like next Sunday? It's the middle day of the BH weekend, so might be OK, I suppose. (As you've probably guessed, I don't do much driving around the London area.)

I don't use the M25 myself as I leave from the Potters Bar area and head cross country on the B156/7/8!

Depending upon the car I have at the time I have often been known to detour along the M54 (or come off at J12) and take the A41/A49. Hardly the most challenging of routes but better than the M6 if you have the time. Watch for mobile "safety" cameras.

a journey done several times a month

m6 then m6 toll M42 then M40 etc

or go to stoke then a50 to m1 then m1 to m25 etc

they are the fastest

a roads and b roads not really sure though often from silverstone back to cheshire i'll go on the a5 then to lichfield, then a51 to stone, a34 to a50 then home as i live on the a50.
