So with the UK road network as it is what do you think would be decent additions to the network to improve it.

Get investment into the roads and improve them. future proof the network.

A1 Newcastle to Edinburgh fill in the missing dual sections.

A66 Dual right across A1 to M6

wales

Norfolk

Suffolk

London Lower Themes crossing outer link to oxford.

south coast motorway

there are a few things that could be done to make major improvements to the way we use the roads.

Dualing the A1 North of Newcastle has been long overdue since I was a kid (and I'm now old!).

...but dualing the A69 between Carlisle and Newcastle never gets a mention and would be a great move IMO.

I have no improvement suggestions, don't waste the money.

My reasoning for replying in such a tongue-in-cheek manner is due to my journey yesterday. From Reading to Kent. This took me onto the M3, M25 and M26. All four lane motorways (mostly anyway).

I know this is a frequently mentioned moan but I just can't comprehend people's use of the lanes.

Almost all, including some professional drivers in vans, but mostly cars all sat in Lane 2 of 4 for miles on end. With the inside lane (lane 1) entirely empty. Similar misuse of Lane 3, with people sat in this for miles on end.

I further shake my head when I see people in the rear view, overtake someone in lane 2, then pull back in, and themselves sit in the exact same lane - ignoring the empty one to their left.

....

So for that reason, I think you could probably spend another £1bn and still have these idiots unable to utilise the roads correctly.

oh actually, the A3 turnoff from the M25 was gridlocked and is always gridlocked. They're doing extensive work on it, but I think it's been going on for over a year. I may be wrong. Whatever is happening, I wish they'd finish it as it creates miles of backlog.

Thsi was also on a Sunday evening, about 7pm.

I'd start by spending a week viewing Google Maps with Traffic and looking for the red sections.

Extend the M27 down to Exeter, and then the M5 down into Cornwall.

Motorway (or at least a dual carriageway) from Bournemouth to either Bristol or Swindon.

Upgrade the A34/A43 from Winchester to Northampton to motorway.

Dual the entire length of the A303.

Huge numbers of segregated, direct and maintained cycle lanes and bike parking in all cities.
It would revolutionise the environment and transport flow in cities.

Agree. Not a favourite for here, but improve public transport for commuting and leisure and get more cars off the roads.

Even when they do build decent cycle infrastructure they don't maintain it.

There's new dedicated cycle lanes near me that are not even 3 months old and they're blocked by branches too big to cycle over in anything other than a proper mountain bike.

No, none really. It just becomes a neverending circus with wider roads encouraging even more traffic.
An improvement in public transport could be more effective.

Pie in the sky stuff but a South Coast Motorway, say from Truro to the M5 at Exeter, to the M27 at Southampton, or something like that, would be helpful.

Going cross country in the South is painful.

100% this. We have miles and miles of unused road space because of fking idiots who still think it’s the ‘slow lane’.

The A3/M25 Wisley work is a nightmare. Ongoing until summer 2025.

Considering vast swathes are in a right mess, and not enough money to fix them, are we not being very hopeful.

Some more east-west connections, or expand the current ones, in England.

Yes the A3/M25 junction is a nightmare, and as I live just of the M3 we've also got a 50 limit and a lane closed on that until Spring 2025 while they build the emergency refuges they didn't build when they spent years turning it into a "Smart" motorway. banghead

Same with the M4 too!

I went to Somerset yesterday and agree the A303 should be dualled all the way.

A third lane on the M26 in Kent would be a huge improvement too.

This. Would be helpful if we could maintain what we have. We are pretty much past the point of no return as far as degredation is concerned. At least not without a heroic effort and eye watering spend. Which clearly isnt going to happen.

Not sure of the point of the thread. Seems like fantasy to me.

Close every other junction on the M6 through Birmingham. It’s not a local bypass!

Junctions on the M5 approaching Birmingham and the M25 could be culled while you are at it.
Too late really though- not building them would have been better.

Same on the North side of M25, The Chinese build airports in the time it is taking. How long can it take to dig out a few lay by,s lol.

Pathetic as usual.

As I do a lot of miles, all over mainland UK, will do 600 plus today, the roads are crumbling, it will bankrupt the country to fix them, so new roads are mostly, a pipedream.

Be careful what you wish for, any new roads will be toll roads, and that leads old roads in the area being tolled roads.

Citizen Kahn and his new Thames tunnel are proof of that, with the aged Blackwall tunnel becoming just that, and 4 quid a trip, will not be long before London is divided in two, with a toll to visit the other side right the way up the Thames.

East, south, Essex and Kent already, or very shortly, are and will be.

40 quid a week is a big lump of a tax on your income, if you live one side and work the other, and the costs to trades, trucks, taxi, etc will be coming out of our pockets one way or another.

4 quid at first, no doubt will rise, it has risen from £2.75 and it is not in force yet.

Roads are now seen as a source of income

Make the A628 Woodhead pass a trans Pennine motorway from Mottram to Sheffield like the M62 using the old railway line on the western side and building new tunnels alongside the existing ones.
