Southern Ireland - Rosslare to Dingle
Discussion
So I think I scanned back 10 pages but didn't see much for the Emerald Isle so thought I would start a new post.
In August I will be travelling to Dingle for a long weekend, not managed to get there since early 2020 so looking forward to getting back, but thought I'd drive this time. I'll be taking my 997
Journey there will be split so travelling from Rosslare to Youghal for the night, ferry gets in a bit later than I had hoped so not all in the time in the world for big detours on this leg.
Then from Youghal to Dingle, where essentially I have a day to kill so plenty of capacity for exploring and even going beyond Dingle and looping back. I should add it's not a driving holiday as such, once I am in Dingle its going to be a heavy Whiskey and Guinness affair. But there might be some afternoons to head out and use Dingle as a base.
Any recommendations welcome.

Having just driven Mizen, Beara, Kerry and Dingle peninsulas over the last couple of weeks, don't expect too much driving fun.
The roads are very poor in terms of undulations and bumps - not so many potholes, but flipping Norah they are rough. Don't take a car without decent suspension travel on offer...
Then there's the mad one moment full width road, then suddenly around a corner it's single-track and often without passing places. Then back to full width but no overtaking. For the next 10km.
There's then lines of tourists in either hire cars (Toyota or Dacia, tell tale sticker of Hertz, Sixt or Europcar etc in the middle of back window) or hire campers. All doing 40mph, less when the view is good.
Finally, there's tour buses galore. Particularly Dingle. And don't even think about trying Slea Head loop anti-clockwise unless you like reversing...
That said, I've had a great couple of weeks in a camper, cycling and climbing mountains. Lovely beer. Great weather generally.

Thanks for that, I guess we'll find what we find, luckily I am also happy just cruising too, but if we find some sportier stuff great. Will still be an adventure. The roads are very poor in terms of undulations and bumps - not so many potholes, but flipping Norah they are rough. I have been all over that area too and it's not really a drivers area. As said undulations follow the underlying bog. If you try making progress you can go from cracking your sump to catching air with no warning on what appears to be dead straight road.
There are alot of great views but if you're driving you'll have to have full concentration on what you are doing, due to massive drops surrounded by tourists being unpredictable for insta. and parking on the verge of narrow roads.
Cork in general is beautiful, great coast and picturesque villages, but un-urbanised beauty so infrastructure like roads is a low priority in most areas.

Probably about 1 hr away.........gap of Dunloe and Lunch at Kate Kearney's cottage?
I would not recommend it, unless you like being hassled, the Jarvey crowd will be all over a UK registered car, not that great food wise either. I think you are doing yourself out of a lot of quirky interesting places heading to Youghal, and some quieter fun roads, Heading cross country towards Macroom, from the outskirts of Waterford, is a far more interesting drive, from Macroom, 1 road into Killarney.
Killarney town has much more to offer, more choice food wise, most good,
Instead of heading the Dingle route from there, Take the Tralee road, first left up Madams hill, after the last roundabout which is known as The Reeks,Killarney by pass to your right, signed for Cork, first left again at top of hill, and take in the View of the lakes from Aghadoe Heights, hotel of that name right there.
Carry on along that road, and at the end turn right, back on track for Dingle.
For a short Lunch stop, the pub I have been going to for 35 years is on Route, Fossa, outskirts of Killarney, take in the Heights, turn left instead of right at the end of that road, down the hill to T junction, it is on your right at the junction. Great food and the Best Guiness in town.
If you are in Kerry, 9th, 10th, or 11th August , Puck Fair in Killorglin in a must visit, Evening best, but expect to park and walk some way, Party central for 3 days.
As said, this time of year do not expect to make pace, the place is haunted everywhere with speed camera vans, and speed guns, especially where roads open up.
Whatever way, be careful with speed, and the Guiness, they are ste hot on DD, often watching bars and restaurants,And morning spot checks, enjoy your trip.

Will pop in and see your sister next trip
Thanks for the responses. Youghal is on the map and booked in simply because well the Irish being the Irish, I said to my friend who's trip it is to the distillery that I was going to drive across and find somewhere to stop midpoint..... "Ahhh I'll set you up a night at Ahern's that I used to manage back in the day" which looks really nice and my love of Seafood meant it was a winner.
Plus the drive to Youghal might get a bit more direct if the Ferry is late getting in etc. Day 2 is where this is more capacity for exploration, then roll into Dingle about 3ish is kinda my loose plan.
