Fun/Scenic Route - Dunkirk to Nürburgring

Heading down this weekend for the first time, initial plan was to get off the ferry at Dunkirk and stick the sat nav on with 'avoid motorways' & 'avoid tolls' and see where it takes us.

Any routes/recommendations from veterans?

Avoid the tolls by all means, but if you try the avoid motorways option then you'll spend twice as long getting across Belgium and won't see anything interesting anyway.

Don't forget that the usual Brussels Friday getaway starts at about 11am, so expect to be in jams if you use the Ring road around Brussels.

Once you're past Liege, then you have a choice of routes, but we usually either go E40 to Liege >E42 to Eupen > N67 to Monschau > B258 to Schleiden > Blankenheim > Müsch > Barweiler > Nurburg.
