Any ideas what this is all about? Some googling tells me that this might be to put in more emergency rest areas, but not certain on this.

Have seen the SPECS cameras going up along the length of the route, which presumably means we'll all be pegged to 50mph drudgery for the next 18 months?

Exactly that. https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Given how many years of misery were inflicted on us to make it a "Smart" Motorway you'd have thought they had enough time to do it right the first time. banghead

Highways England have also quietly announced that miles and miles of the M1 is going to be 50mph to install these extra emergency areas. By the summer there will be roadworks from 48-44, 35a-32, 31-28, 25-23a, 19-16 and 13-10. Absolute misery for us northerners trying to get down south - maybe if they'd done the job properly in the first place this extra work, which naturally will take at least a year, wouldn't be necessary rolleyes
