A friend is visiting me in North Yorkshire with his new Boxster and it would be rude not to take him for a little tour of the finest roads.

Based in Harrogate I'm fairly central and if I'm mood to go for a drive I tend to enjoy myself on the triple 'up & over' to Otley as well as taking in Greenhow > Blubberhouses.

I'd rather more of a tour this time but super conscious that heading over to the coast can be a bit of a trek.

Within reasonable distance I can think of:

  • Boroughbridge > Easingwold
  • Scotch Corner > Yarm
  • Stokesley > Helmsley
  • Blakey Ridge
  • Helmsley > Thirsk (Sutton Bank is a view that I love)
  • Settle > Hawes
They are all great roads but I'd like to take a trip to the coast, trouble is I'm less certain of worthy roads in the direction. Thoughts most welcome on suitably enjoyable roads to drive on.

I get where you are coming from but the stretch from Ripon > Fellbeck is absolutely dreadful at the moment with significant chunks of the road missing.

To me it's one of those roads that the idea is far better than the reality.

After Whitby, if your heading back west, I find the A174 towards Teesside a nice road - a good variety of steep hills and open stretches and if you peel off into Brotton, Saltburn-By-The-Sea is a nice place to stop. From there you can take the A173 and A172 back towards Harrogate, or take the A174 Parkway and head for the B1264 towards Scorton and Catterick.

Teesdale!

A684 up from Ripon to Hawes via Masham. Hawes to Brough to Middleton in Teesdale to Alston. A686 Hexham Road, past the racecourse and back down towards Stanhope from Derwent Water or a shorter route via Allenheads & Rookhope.

Yep. Same with considerable parts of the Yorkshire Dales - on the basis that we are looking for some driving fun, not just scenery/tourism.

Unless your going far enough North of Leeds/York to get to Teesdale and the North Pennines etc as suggested, ythen you want the yellow side of the map, not the red side:

Quieter. Better surfaced. Typically better sight lines.

I love Whitby (and Staithes and Robin Hood's Bay), but it/they are a ballache to get to. There is certainly nothing noteworthy from scotch corner eastwards to get you there.

You're local like me, so you'll know that this is the correct answer.

Basically anywhere on this map (although obviously Swaledale and Nidderdale):

If you want to do Boroughbridge to Easingwold and fancy the coast, then head from Easingwold to Malton, then on to Sledmere, and then on to Bridlington or Filey. This avoids nearly all of the coastal dawdlers.

I sometimes go out on a Sunday Porsche run from Ilkley, a good one we did was out to Gargrave then up to Airton, over to Settle, then Ingleton to Ribblehead and back to Settle and then back home.

This ^^^
Try and avoid the sheep or crashing off the road. Watch out for the lone (and possibly mad) cyclist on the MIT to Alston Road.
Also Penrith - Hartside pass - Alston. Don't get too giddy, it's a very technical road.
