Watford Gap... 67 miles from Watford (Why) Opened 1959
Discussion
Taken this Morning.
I use the roads and Motorways for my work *(Deliveries).
Its only when you have a job a like mine that you realise how important Service Stations are.
Mainly of course for the Free Toilet Fascillities.Alright the prices of the goods and food are hideous but who cares(you had the chance to get your requirements before you left at a much better price??)
So give your favourite Service Station a mention....perhaps post a link or picture...and tell us what you like about it??

When I was a motorcycle courier in the early 80s, one of our guys had a delivery to Manchester Square W1, near Oxford Circus, West End of London.
He disappeared, they couldn't get him on the radio and they started calling hospitals in case he had crashed.
About 3 hours later he rang the control room from a public phone box.
"I'm in Manchester so where is the Square?"

Surely the only possible winners are gloucester and tebay???The village of Watford near the Watford Gap services is actually really pretty - I drove through it recently whilst avoiding bad traffic on the M1 when driving from Reading to Leicester. I expect the noise of the motorway ruins the experience of living there, though.

We like things to not stand out round our way, hence the grass roofs. They also help to insulate etc etc.Same company as Teebay Services. All locally sourced food, some locals have been known to go there for Sunday lunch!
This story was related to me second hand, could be BS; in the late 70’s an European trucker, driving a rather large articulated HGV, arrived in the small village of Waddington near Clitheroe, Lancashire, bemused at what he found, he just parked up.
The HGV attracted much attention, locals tried to help. However, the language barrier proved difficult. At some point the trucker showed them what was being delivered, apparently one of locals Mrs. Kay (Waddington is a rather affluent little village), recognized them as aviation parts.
Apparently, there is a Waddington in Lincolnshire.
Knowing Mrs. Kay’s age it was, entirely plausible.

Me and an ex spent New years eve at Pizza Express, Beaconsfield services.
Drove out from W London
It was really quiet, just us. We wanted to get away from the crowds.
The one at Beaconsfield is an exact copy of Cobham services. Same shops, all in the exact same places, same layout.
Odd feeling as I've stopped at Beaconsfield loads but have only been to Cobham once and I just felt freaked out and felt that I had gone way off my intended journey
