Happy 100 for A Roads

Apologies if I missed the celebration of this milestone earlier in the year. 2023 is 100 years so ce the start of the UK road numbering system. A mix oflogic and not so logical.
For example why did the A6 stop at the Scottish border while the A1 went all the way to Edinburgh?

They radiate from the two capital cities: 7,8 and 9 radiate from Edinburgh. It seems as good a way of doing it as any other.
