Looking for a spot of inspiration for a late summer road trip - I'm thinking one or maybe two nights away by myself.

I'm based near Harrogate so familiar with the local area, as well as this I've been up to the Highlands this year so perhaps that's for another time.

Wales appeals but it's been 15+ years since I've been to Betws y Coes or Dolgellau.

Quality of driving roads is priority rather than scenery, fortunately the often go hand in hand.

A6 out of Kendal and up to Shap Summit running parallel to M6 then come back down and have a couple of days in the Lake District. Try Hardknott Pass for fun.

Galloway: up through the Dales, back via Borders & North Pennines. Look at a map, draw a line from Maybole to Biggar, don't go above it, can't go wrong.

I would personally be looking at something like this if you were inclined to visit Yorkshire and Cumbria:

Plenty of options to stay on that route if you wanted a night or two away as well.

Hi, a small group drove from the M62 to Penrith then to Duns (Jim Clark Museum) to Peebles - stayed at the Hydro Hotel.

Then from Peebles through Northumberland and Durham down through Masham and towards Harrogate.

Rather than the Hydro, drive a couple of miles further out of town on the same road and stay at The Cardrona. I've stayed in Peebles seven times and it's the best I've found for groups.

The A5092 and A595 around the south and west of the Lakes is a good start if you get a clear run, it's never that busy but if you get stuck it can take a while to manage a safe overtake.
After that head into and around the Scottish Borders and Northumberland, avoid the main arterial routes to dodge the regular traffic and you'll be fine - if it looks good on a map it most likely is.
Words of caution, you'll find areas without a decent phone signal, petrol station can be far apart and sheep have no road sense.
