Hi,
I am planning a trip from Germany to Italy via Switzerland and back to France via Switzerland. As I want I to go via the passes, eg Gottard, Furka, Grimsel etc will I need a Swiss vignette or is it easy to avoid the toll roads whilst there?
Thanks

A Swiss vignette isnt to use only on the toll roads, it's for most main routes in Switzerland that require this displayed in your car, for the cost of it I would just get one ordered in advanced.

Have a good trip, done this many times from the UK, wonderful part of the world.

In my experience, the Swiss police check cars at the border. But I just bought one at the border when they stopped me, which they were fine with

This is hopefully helpful. Has links to places to buy and the map of roads where you need it.

I think crossing through one of the non-motorway border crossings and navigating using the "no toll roads" option might work (not sure of the specific passes you mentioned). You might end up spending more on fuel/electricity/extra overnight stay(s), though. And 2023 one is valid until 31st January 2024.

2022 was supposed to be the last sticker-style vignette, lots of talk about going digital but I expect the sticker remaining an option.

Thanks for responses, think it keeps it simple just to get one and go where I want.

Yes I bought one in advance. I remember hitting a long queue at some point and another driver waved us down the empty lane where all the cars that already had the vignette could just go straight through. In those instances you jumped a rather sizeable queue waiting to buy theirs. Would definitely do it in advance.

Sounds like a good approach! Driving any nontrivial distance in Italy or France will cost the same, with the added hassle of toll gates.

Since you plan on getting the vignette: St. Bernhard Pass has also quite nice views, and the French-speaking area (in general) is also worth visiting (although I'm biased smile ). Chillon castle/Montreux, Gruyeres (cheese and also H.R. Giger museum if somewhat NSFW art is ok). Roads between Aigle and Chateau d'Oex are pretty nice, too.

Aletch Glacier, just on the other side of the "Röstigraben", is also worth seeing (even if it means leaving the car behind in the valley).

Blimey nice little earner they have going on there the Swiss one not too bad at £10 extra but really no need all services near Swiss borders sell them, the French & German emissions ones are £4 & £5 stickers from official sites & they add circa £16 & £19 on top.

I've just driven into Switzerland right now from Germany. No police at the border and a sign saying buy a vignette at the petrol station in the next village. 40CHF and they wanted cash! Asked them if they had a cash machine nope, did I have any cash on me? Nope. She relented and let me pay with my card.

Turns the UK is pretty much cashless. Ow compared to the rest of the EU, I was asked in Germany and Switzerland for cash, spoke to someone and he said that EU card processing fees are high and that it's only the Brits who pay for everything on cards.

In summary, don't worry if you don't have a vignette before you hit the border, just buy one asap at the border or the next petrol station then you'll be fine.

I’m out here now and the Swiss vignette was CHF40 from a petrol station.

So far I’ve found the Germans prefer cash, funny how many machines weren’t working or just not accepting cards, the Swiss did accept cards ok, and the Italians are mixed. My restaurant tonight in Italy is cash only, so having made 1 cash withdrawal every 6 months in the UK it is every few days in the continent.

Cheers for the heads up on Italy, heading there tomorrow.
