European road trip

Hello all,

We're planning a road trip across Europe this June and although we've put everything in place, got the route, car and all breakdown cover sorted I have been told that there are 'car enthusiasts' dotted all over Europe that will help in the case of a breakdown etc. This does sound like a great idea but does anyone know of this? is it actually a thing and if so how can these people be contacted?
Any help is gratefully appreciated.
