Looking for a bit of inspiration for North European road trips, I've a real urge to explore far and wide this year.

My base is North Yorkshire which always means a slightly compromised start/end to any Euro adventure.

Love to hear of any inspirational trips, bonus points for pics!

Not very exciting but when I was about 21 way back in 2003, myself and couple of mates were planning on going to the Ring. They opted out but I figured "How hard can it be" and went myself like some sort of tragic Nobby Nae Mates. So armed with an aging Cavalier and an AA road map of Europe. tok the ferry overnight from Newcastle (which was rough) then straight down to the hotel in Nurburg met a few decent lads out there, had some beers, did a few scary laps over the next few days, did some tourist stuff and actually quite enjoyed.

I'd planned on going to an event at Silverstone on the way home so left the Ring bound for Calais, got lost somewhere in Belgium so only just made the crossing. Stopped at some random services on the M25 for a shower and food then on to Silverstone for about 8am and stayed for about 2hrs of the show before deciding I just wanted my bed so drove the remaining 420 miles home. I think I'd been driving / travelling for about 22hrs by the time I got home

These days going to Tesco is about my limit...

Love it!

So often these trips have an element of craziness which we look back on with fondness.

Is a ferry to Rotterdam the easiest way for you to reach the continent?

If so, the best driving roads are always in hilly terrain and the closest areas will probably be Ardennes (Spa) and Eifel (nurbur…)…

I did in 2013 after a relationship ended and my mates all bailed on the road trip plan.

One of the best things I ever did. This year I'm hoping to do something similar for the 10yr anniversary, but this time with my wife and in something a bit more special.

You don't need to over think it.

I'm just back from a week around north eastern France and Belgium visiting WW1 sites.

Just get a toll tag and use Waze to send you down random country lanes. Come up with a list of places to go to the night before and make it up as you go along.

If its your thing- I once drove Calais to Brugges, Ypres and spent some time sat in the woods etc around Ypres, cycling round etc. Bruges was my base. Couple of nights there. Fantastic.

Calais to Bruges is a really easy dual carriageway route.

You could stay in hostel bars or Airbnb etc

Bauhaus in Bruges has a apartment set up so you don't have to share rooms
