Best of Scottish A7XX roads?
Discussion
I'm travelling back 'home' next week but making it very much a road trip, I generally detour off the M74 to head towards Edinburgh and let's be honest, they are all fabulous on the right day.
Curious to hear what is regarded as the best cross-country border route and that includes North - South or South - North.
FWIW I'm travelling from Yorkshire so dropping off M74 or A1 is an option.

A701 >>> A702 but do cut across to avoid the grimness of Penicuik.
A68 over Carter Bar also good with the great views of the city as you come down the hill.
I used to hate the A1 but have softened to it.
I almost <always> regret taking the A68 other than for the Kielder section - it's a bit too busy to truly enjoy and if simply following traffic, goes on forever and a day. A68 over Carter Bar also good with the great views of the city as you come down the hill.

A701 is a great road, just got to watch out for the odd pothole especially on the Midlothian section from Leadburn to Auchendinny.
If you have a load of time to kill then I'd highly recommend doing a massive detour and taking in some of Scotlands best driving roads.
I've plotted it on Google. Sorry for the length in advance

Edited because I misread the OP
