So I’m off to do some mountain biking in the Alps in the summer, but lucky enough all my kit is being taken down for me and have the opportunity to take the 911. The Alps will be the highlight, but all previous times I’ve driven across I’ve been on the Autoroute just get there train. This time I might take a couple of days to truck down. I’m sure this has been covered in multiple places, but any roads or routes that are worth taking to build up a route.

Thanks in advance

Depends which part of the Alps you are going to - French, Swiss, Austrian? It's a big area.

It might still be worth the autoroute blast down to about Troyes - it's there that the scenery gets more interesting and hilly.

I have used the D67 through Gray and on via Besancon and Pontarlier when heading for Haute Savoie but it depends where in the Alps you are going.

Ha! Good point well made on location, I'll be ending up in Les Arc, would probably agree of burning the first 4-5 hours on the Auto Router, and get NW France out of the way. I would like to include the Milau Bridge so that a factor I am already putting in.

The A75 autoroute down to Millau is brilliant for a motorway - curvy and hilly.

I used to do the Les Arcs run every summer for a good few years - I miss those trips!

Mostly we hammered it down the autoroute overnight - leave Cambridge at 8PM and we were there in time to hit the slopes the next morning. We did once take a detour through the mountains; I can’t recall the roads we took I’m afraid, but seeing the sun coming up from the top of a mountain pass somewhere near Geneva made that the most memorable of all journeys. Highly recommended if you have the time!

If you're planning on taking your time, you can gave a blast on the Autobahns, take in the 500 road, do a few Swiss passes, then take the St Barnard pass/tunnel on your way to Les Arcs.
