Avoiding Hamburg - driving from NL to north Denmark
Discussion
I'm driving from Hook of Holland to north Denmark (on way to Norway) and understand that Hamburg is a real bottleneck - roadworks and lengthy delays. Any suggestions regarding avoiding Hamburg?
I've looked at the ferry at Wischhafen but anecdotal feedback appears to indicate lengthy delays there too. I would be happy to do a longer circuitous route off the A-bahn to the east of Hamburg if the roads were interesting - any ideas here?
I'd be leaving HoH about 9:00 Thursday so would be in Hamburg area ~ 14:00..

The A7 is probably your best option. If you're there around 1400 it shouldn't be too bad to take the A7 through the Elbe Tunnel. It only really got congested around 1600-1800 when I worked there. Once you're north of the airport the amount of traffic really tails off and you can make good progress.
Stick to the outside lane, as it tended to back up on the off ramp on the north side into Altona/Groß Flottbeck.
The ferries across the Elbe were always a crab-shoot for cars, so best to avoid if you want to get up to Denmark in good time.
