Could I please have some suggestions for the best road route from London to Keswick in the Lake District which has the least likelihood of traffic build-up / roadworks / reduced speed? The obvious choices are to take the M40/M6, M1/A66 or A1M/A66.

Any suggestions for some good driving roads as we approach the Lakes is also most welcome smile.

Last time I did it I did M40/M6 - in terms of traffic, I used the M40 fairly regularly and unless there has been an accident it is generally fast and free…

Not the M1

From the W of London use the M40, from the E use the M11 & A14

M6 Toll road both times and be prepared for the cheshire section of the M6 to be slow but it's better now it's a smart section

A1M / A66 can be nice if it's quiet but both roads are prone to accidents / hold ups

A1M / A66 can be nice if it's quiet but both roads are prone to accidents / hold ups, esp on weekdays when they're full of wagons

I drove up to Keswick today. Took the M6 and came
off early for the kirkstone pass, great windy road, not a single vehicle met, and stunning scenery. Highly reccomended.
