Evening all,

Planning a long weekend in Wales with a few mates. We're staying in Mid Wales so planning on hitting South, Mid and North Wales. I've got a few roads I've picked up from searching so far but it'd be great to hear if there are any 'must do roads' that I should include?

I'm also trying to plan the trip using Google Maps but it's not the easiest - any suggestions on route planning? Are there any car sat navs where you can upload a GPX route file?

Thanks

Myrouteapp for route planning and gpx file creation, then load gpx file onto TomTom mydrive for navigation through TomTom Go app on iPhone/android phone.

Make sure you do the B4391 between Bala and Blaenau-Ffestiniog. I drove along it on a trip with mates last May and it' was fantastic!

You could create a tomtom mydrive account and create gpx files which can be saved onto a microdisc and inserted into sat navs.

Black mountain pass A4069 is a top gear favourite and one of best in Wales heading South East from llangadog..

A4059 ditto, heading South finishing at penderyn distillery.

B4520 from Brecon to Builth Wells

B4560 heading south

Elan Valley from Ryhadder

I've used this site in the past in Europe (was in a car - not on a bike)

The routes and roads I chose from it were excellent

Top choice.

I would also recommend Staylitte Pass in Mid Wales.

Google Maps works well enough. Create a route defined by stops on desktop (much easier than on a tablet) and “save” the route by emailing or messaging it to yourself.
As long as you have access to data at the start of your route you can just download the route when you are ready to set off.
There’s an eight stop limit, so break your route into sections.
You can download the base map for offline use so you are not using data all the time, you just need it at the start of each section.

Search out a free Windows program called Tyre (trace your route everywhere) great bit if software to create routes with no limits. Gives a choice of formats to save files in and export, as well as making roadbooks.

Calimoto is great for this, appreciate there are a lot of suggestions, you might need to try a few and see what suits you best.

Check out the viamichelin website; it's a Michelin mapping website. If you zoom in on the map, you can see that certain roads are highlighted in green; these are scenic routes. I promise you that you will enjoy driving any of these roads and you can make up your own route with epic roads. The app is also worth downloading.

Some of the more scenic routes are not green on the viamichelin site, though to be fair most roads in Wales are more scenic than most.

So many lovely scenic roads in Wales.

However there are no so many average speed checks and camera vans - so keep your eye out.

Also take a picnic and stop off for some amazing walks en route.
