Hello all,

I have just returned home from a weekend away only to return and find that our next door neighbour has put speed bumps in the road. We live in a private road, which is also a cul-de-sac, and we are right at the end, so the only people that have to cross the bumps are us. We have only lived there for 8 months, and they have recently complained that our landscaping contractor have been going too fast down our little tiny narrow, twisty turny lane. We contacted all our neighbours before we started the work, to say if it was too loud, too much disturbance, unsightly etc to please come and let us know, and we gave everyone a card with our numbers on it. Most people thanked us, and have popped up to the end of our road to have a look at the landscaping we are doing, and we have some lovely neighbours - except what now appears to be the ones right next door to us. My husband went and politely asked them to remove it as soon as they can, but they have refused, sighting speeding by our son - which was 6 months ago, he stayed for four days with his wife and children, and nothing was said at the time. We have three cars, which they have quietly been sarcastic about, and we are creating extra space. We are parked legally on our land, and do not interfere with the turning circle outside our house or the parking of anyone else's cars. no one other than delivery drivers and the postman comes to our house. We have worked with our contractors to make sure than nothing bigger than a transit van comes up the road, as we do not want to damage the surface, as we are all jointly responsible for the surface. Our contractors say they have received a complaint from them about the speeding vans. When I say speeding, this is no more than about 6-10 miles an hour. There is no speed limit on our rod, he has taken it upon himself to decide that it was speeding. There are only three other houses that use this bit of the private road, the other three neighbours do not have to come up further than the three that use this bit of the road. There are only 6 houses in total on this entire stretch of private road. Our deeds say it is a private road, and the residents are responsible for it's upkeep and condition. My husband has had to go for a walk he is so angry. What on earth shall we do. The bumps look compliant to me, and not likely to cause any damage to vehicles, even my old mini. Any suggestions before I go to the solicitor??

I can offer no help at all, so not going to pretend I can, I'm just here for the pics?

I'd love to see what your mental neighbour has configured I the pursuit of being awkward.

What are they made of? Are they moveable?

This strikes me as pretty unneighbourly of them, so I would think carefully before what I did next. Mainly because presumably you like the house a lot etc

You’ll get heaps of ideas from here as to how to escalate war with your neighbours. But we all know that’s a bad idea because you’ve got to live there.

That said, buy an old banger. Drive faster. Park in view of their house.

Just remove them without damage and return back to them.

I would go straight to the solicitor. Saves time

Neighbour sounds like a bully - call his bluff with some shock and awe tactics

I'd be tempted to do the same. We need pics of the speedbumps though. I assume they are the rubber, bolted down ones ?

I'd be asking him if he's willing to pay for the additional wear and tear to your vehicles. If his house is just before the speed bump I'd also start parking outside his house, against citing the wear and tear and discomfort they cause to your lower back now that you have been singled out and forced to go over them.

Even though its private land I can't imagine he has the authority to install a speed bump on his own accord? Especially as he won't be able to prove any "speeding" has occurred and his perception is said speeding is entirely subjective?

Either that, or install something that makes the ramp angle so shallow that you can continue to "speed" over them without noticing. If he removes yours, he will have set the precedent of removal without permission and you can go and do the same for his.

I’d guess that the road is owned by the residents jointly, or owned by an entity (eg a company) which itself is owned jointly. Either way I would be astonished if the ownership structure permitted one joint owner to modify the road unilaterally; I’d expect any modifications to have to be agreed on by at least a majority of owners, possibly an enhanced majority (eg 2/3 or 3/4) or even unanimously.

To illustrate this: if it were otherwise what would stop any one owner digging a trench across the entrance to the road to prevent all motor vehicle access.

I’d remove the humps immediately and follow up with a solicitor’s letter putting the neighbour firmly in his place.

Beep your horn every time you go over a speedbump, no matter what time it is.

Approach each bump slowly, then stop, rev engine loudly as if trying to get over it and then proceed to the next one and repeat.

Buy a trailer. Fill it with loose bits of metallic junk. Negotiate speed bump several times a day. Bonus points for late nights.

No, because they don't want to look a dick.

Love the ideas around making as much noise as possible going over the humps, and the idea about ragging a snotter up & down the lane.

I’d also go for a concerted campaign of minor irritations;

Glow plug RC cars make an annoying racket.

Burning garden waste when he us down wind.
Extra points for windows open or laundry out.

Wind chimes.

Bring everyone’s recycling bins in but make sure any goo and residue gets emptied into his.

Aim your security lights so that any late night movement on your property looks like ‘Close Encounters’ from his,
Bonus points if you can arrange it to project the shadow of your dog stting onto his bedroom curtains.

Wips dog poo on his car & house door handles, then wipe it off.
He won’t notice until he picks his nose.
Then the violation will be so complete he will smell it everywhere even when it isn’t there.

Which is coincidentally one of the main reasons kerb-to-kerb speed humps are not widely used in residential areas. The people who live by the humps get very pissed off very quickly.

both access roads to my place are riddled with speed bumps. I enjoy sport mode, first gear in the V8

That's some impressive passive aggressiveness going there.

Personally I'd remove them and leave them on his porch.
