Travelling from London to Settle in Yerkshire on Wednesday afternoon, expect to be on the M6 at Stafford circa 4pm heading to Preston area. My memories are of a hellish section up to Manchester, can I expect the same and should I take the M1 instead?

M6 has a 60 Mph average speed zone from just after junction 12 up to junction 15. The entry into this zone has 4 lanes down to 3 so it can occasionally cause tail backs. It's less hellish than you remember but still a little warm.

J13-15 is still roadworks 60mph limit but usually not to bad for traffic, then j16-19 is new 4 lane smart motorway and is certainly better then it used to be.

Thanks, I think I'll risk it. M40 to Brum and M6 toll make the first part easy and worth any potential hiccup further up.
