Imagine what life would be like if they declassified Portsmouth.

It’s what, 5 miles? Does it matter what it’s classified as?

From page 9 of the report:

• The types of vehicles which can use and access the highway are
different.
• Requirements for hard shoulders, and central reservations
are different.
• Speed limits, designed gradients and bend radius’s are different.
• Illumination requirements and road standards otherwise are
different.
• On motorways stopping is restricted to emergencies.

That's why the Dartford Crossing isn't classified as a motorway.

Sorry, should have been clearer. In context of how the OP has framed it does it constitute a “war on motorways” if a road which is so short is reclassified for sensible reasons?

As long as the road is safe to use and fit for purpose I’m not sure it matters if this short stretch of road is a motorway or A road.

far from sensible reasons. the motorway status is because its a link to the port. its part of the overall motorway network. taking away the motorway will allow them to reduce the standards of the road, will allow them to do all sorts that a motorway prohibits them from doing.

its a backward step. and a war on the motorways - The A601(M) is being downgraded. to allow them to add a roundabout and put in housing. The M181 was altered and a roundabout added.... slow erosion of the motorway network

Looking at those plans I'm more worried about the loss of a free flowing junction and the implementation of a guaranteed traffic nightmare roundabout. All part of making it more difficult to drive into the city I'm sure.

The M32 in Bristol is also under consideration.
My understanding is that it will allow junctions to be added which do not have to be built to motorway standards. i.e ramps roundabouts etc

Usual Internet forum storm in a teacup then. Whatever makes you happy.

All your examples are pointless little stubs which have no real need to have motorway status.

As for the M32 why make all traffic route into the centre if you can add junctions and have traffic leave earlier. If removing motorway status is required to do that crack on. There are plenty of high capacity routes in this country which aren’t motorways and are perfectly usable.

Appreciate this isn't getting the best response on here, but I can see OP's point. Can anyone think of anything in the last 5 years that has been to the benefit of the motorist or to make travelling by car easier of quicker?

Around here, really wide, good visibility A roads have been dropped to 50mph limits, lots of dual carriageways dropped to 40 or 50 with cameras, "smart" motorways, motorway limits permanently dropped to 60mph for "air quality". Whilst the OP has called out a specific example that may not resonate with anyone, I believe there is a very deliberate, insidious creep against driving frown

exactly -

the road just now has frontage limited. no garages no shops no houses. this could be changed for the worse.
