Road trip to Germany in July 2022
Discussion
Covid permitting, me and a pal are considering a road trip to Germany Thursday to Tuesday and wondered what more experienced people thought.
We'll get the chunnel to Calais and perhaps have a night in France somewhere. We'd then head towards that Air and Car museum in Stuttgart and have a night there. We'd then like to head to Berlin for some Cold War culture and a night or two there.
I did think about heading to Peinemunde but I reckon that's probably a bit too much driving really, especially if I do get an Abarth 595 by then.
Anywhere else we could consider either en route or a up to. 3 hour detour?
I did consider heading to the grossglockner initially after seeing the sunrise thread but again, quite a lick all that way.
In terms of accommodation, what's best in terms of value vs comfort?
Any other tips?
Thanks

If you're planning the Sinsheim museum, don't for get there are two of them. There are packages available with a night in a hotel in between:
https://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/2-day-museum...
Both museums are well worth it.
While near Stuttgart you have the Porsche museum
https://www.porsche.com/international/aboutporsche...
And the Mercedes museum
https://museum-ticket.mercedes-benz.com/?csref=mc-...
Then it really depends which way you're heading. The BMW museum is in Munich, the Audi museum is in Ingolstadt, and of course north of Stuttgart (a couple of hours) is the Nürburgring and also Hockenheim. Worth checking if there are any events on.
Berlin is worth a week on its own.

Thanks very much, exactly why I posted on here and I had no idea there were 2 museums. https://sinsheim.technik-museum.de/en/2-day-museum...

Lots of the routes between places mentioned here are really boring and very long. Stuttgart to Berlin is 8-10 hours realistically with stops and traffic. Stuttgart to grossglockner is also a long slog because the roads are all quite small.
I would say pick Stuttgart and one of the other places and then take a bit more time to go between them and enjoy the area some more. Grossglockner gets my vote, its very easy do other passes from there (Timmelsjoch) and then the drive home via the black forest and vosges in France, maybe a night in Mulhouse to visit the Musée National de l'Automobile - Collection Schlumpf.

Stuttgart to the Alps is quite far (and in July not very pleasant due to holiday traffic)
For route planning you should use the following, so you can plan more interesting routes https://kurviger.de/
Personally, I would either base myself closer to the Alps and then do a few passes or stay in the Stuttgart region and drive through the Black Forest, which is supposed to have some nice driving roads

Some moons ago I did a run with fellow members of the Porsche 968 UK forum to Stuttgart and back. The write up is here: https://www.porsche968uk.co.uk/porsche-968-stuttga...
This is the route we took (starting from Antwerp as one of the members was based there):
If you do go to the Black Forest to drive, best to stay south - the northern stretches are far too busy to be enjoyable (as a recent Harry's Garage video also discussed).

True, but the route to the Austrian alps goes past Stuttgart which is a bonus. Being based in the Alps would be better. Somewhere in the Dolomites is ideal, means you can do the Austrian passes on the way in and out of Italy and a stop off in Stuttgart/France to break up the long slogs.
