IMO it can't be difficult dawbing some meaningful lane markings on a road but I see many examples which (imo) just confuse.

Example 1 -

A few years back now as I got it changed after whinging at the then highways manager but after some resurfacing on the two lane carriageway going in to Taunton L1 was painted with a left turn/straight ahead arrow. L2 was painted with straight ahead only. However when you got to the stop line L1 had now changed to left turn only. So if you wanted to go straight on you're now in the wrong lane.

Example 2 -

Approaching Syston in Leicestershire (Hobby Horse Rbt) the dual carriageway has a sign at the left showing L2 for Syston. Great I want Syston so take L2. However L2 then splits in to 2 lanes then into 3 lanes, with all 3 lanes simply painted "A607" like below. So what do I do? Go left, straight on or turn right to get to Syston? In fact all 4 lanes have A607 painted on them if you look so God help you if you are wanting to follow the A607 somewhere.

Signage is absymal imo in cities nowadays.

I just had a quick look at Google Street View; there's a large green sign prior to your image that shows Syston straight on followed by another with right lane for straight on for Syston followed by a third smaller one advising centre lane for straight on.

Whilst it's dual carriageway the signage shows take the right lane for Syston -

Then when the road splits in to 4 lanes it shows to take the outside lane for Syston, but that lane then splits into 3 lanes all of which just say "A607". Which one for Syston? -

But it doesn't really matter it is the painted LANE MARKINGS (not the signage) I was grumbling about. What is the point in all 3 possible directions being simply painted "A607"? That isn't helpful at all imo. Signage is a different thing, still inadequate here though.

Seems clear enough to me, straight ahead if Syston is your destination.

You're missing my point :-)

I'm on about lane markings (the white paint on the road). You're on about signage (metal street furniture). The two are different things.

I was merely saying I don't find 4 lanes all painted "A607" helpful, almost completely pointless in fact. I'd prefer them painted with where they're going (Leices, Sys'n, etc as is done in many places).

If the lane makings are concealed by stationary or slow moving traffic, as is often the case at such junctions, you won't be able to see them, much less read them. In any case, the green signs contain all the information you need to get to Syston; where the A607 goes is irrelevant (thus 'pointless') if that is your destination.
