I've got a week in York (Well, Just above Hull actually, but have car can travel) - What's the must-sees of the Yorkshire dales and possibly the North York Moors?

I know there's some gems up there - Just want to make sure I can make the most of them!

So many. Pickering to Whitby is probably my favourite. When it’s quiet. Which it often isn’t.

Agreed, the A169 is amazing. NY500 is just outside Pickering too.

Other than that, any of the roads around the Moors are fantastic. I live in Scarborough, one of my favourite circuits is Scarborough to Pickering on the A170, then A169 to Whitby. After Saltersgate and Ellerbeck take a left towards Goathland. On entering Goathland, take a left and enjoy the back roads to Whitby, it's beautiful and if you catch it early with no traffic it's great fun too.

Some skinny roads though, what car are you in?

Bit of a trek but you did mention the Dales https://www.drivingroads.co.uk/buttertubs-pass-yor... Plus there's a lot more to take in around there such as calling in the Green Dragon where there's http://hardrawforce.com/waterfall.html ...Oh looks like things have changed (It's a while since) http://www.greendragonhardraw.com/ Access was through the pub in days of yor beer
Yes, NY 500 worth a look, always like Pickering - Whitby run too, bikers run Helmsley Stokesley https://drivingroadguys.com/helmsley-to-stokesley-... Hope you have an enjoyable run around.

Try either or both of these routes. They include a variety of fast sweeping to narrow moorland roads, some great scenery.

I think everyone's got you covered, but everyday york commuter top tip is if you go there from hull be wary of speed camera Van's they love them on that route, more towards york end though/ shiptonthorpe area.

Also the brantingham area is nice for driving and walks smile

What a great little road from Stape to Egton Bridge is - almost no traffic. thumbup

Until last year I worked at Staxton and RAF Fylingdales and live in Stockton on Tees, so had a great choice of interesting routes home.

If you fancy something a little different instead of the Chop Gate road, try Helmsley / Rievaulx / Caydale Mill (ford) to Osmotherley / Sheepwash / Swainby.

Also a lovely road around the Cockayne loop. Not forgetting Rosedale Chimney. The Lion on Blakey Ridge is a good watering hole.

Working at RAF Fylingdales is exactly how I got to know the area, I commuted from Egton Bridge to Fylingdales for a couple of years until I got posted to Leeming. Every morning was a rally stage laugh

Brilliant stuff, Cheers biggrin

I'm in an FK8; A bit wide but fairly versatile. All the luggage is out and no passengers, so should be a nice bit of driving provided I can get the fuel!

I'm at Linton on Ouse now until I retire early next year.

I competed on many a road rally in the 70's and 80's with numerous top 5 finishes. That is how I got to know the Stape road.

So for you, it was an actual rally stage!

Linton-On-Ouse is another great little camp, surrounded by good roads.

Managed to get this one done today - In Dad's XF Sportbrake, but still good fun to be had. Moderate traffic; Just enough to make for some entertaining overtakes without impinging on flow.

Looking forwards to trying some of the other routes in the Civic - I think I'll be back this way for driving in future!

Despite living here , 10minutes from the Moors and 20 from the Dales , I wouldn't choose either for driving fun , unless you are prepared to get up very early. Wensleydale (which I endured last week ) is 90% PITA and 10 % fun . Swaledale is worse . There are some nice drives on the Moors but fewer roads and often populated by manic bikers - hello Stokesley/Helmsley road B1257. From York the road down to Howden is a delight - no big views, flat , but fast and with some lovely curves. Whisper it - the nicest roads in Yorkshire are south and east of Malton , across the edge of the Wolds.

Getting up very early is a given for any decent drive imho.

I’ve explored some of the area you mention but have not found much I’d go back to - Would welcome some more specific route recommendations to check out thumbup

I’ve lived in York 20 years and this is the right answer. driving
It’s my favourite road, winding through a valley and rarely too much traffic. Enjoy!
