Hi,
What’s the crack with these grey overhead gantry cameras in that section on the m25, I was driving today with Waze open and couldn’t help but notice most of them on Waze are marked with a red X indicating that they don’t work? There was a variable speed limit displayed as well and it seems like most people just ignored it, I looked the odd one out actually doing the speed limit.
They do look empty inside, however TomTom still picks them up as usual and beeps when your near it.
There is quiet a few of them it seems like every other gantry has them overhead gantry cameras (I’m talking about the old old cameras, not the brand new ones that are on the side of the gantry, just to make it clear)

I'd be very cautious on that stretch from 10 going anti clockwise, they are newer systems all the way up to Sevenoaks junction 5 and even if all the signs are deactivated I believe they are still operational as average speed cameras over a long distance between gantries.
Clockwise from 10 should be the older systems with occasional fixed cameras behind the illuminated signs, can't ever remember them flashing not sure they are even turned on.

I was coming back from m23 heading towards the M4, they’d be very lucky catching someone on an average speed camera there since the traffic is horrendous.Clockwise from 10 should be the older systems with occasional fixed cameras behind the illuminated signs, can't ever remember them flashing not sure they are even turned on.
I have been told that the overhead gantry cameras (the grey boxes above every lane) are not variable speed limit cameras, and the only cameras that do work with variable speeds are the new ones that are on the side of the gantry, I’m not sure how true that is as I do not want to test it lol.
And to answer your question about them flashing I’m 100% certain they didn’t flash anyone exceeding the speed limit today when I was driving through that section, when you drive underneath them they almost seem empty inside, it looks like just a box with no camera in it, at least that’s what it looks like from down below so the theory about the cameras above every individual lane being deactivated might be true but once again I don’t really want to be the one to find out lol.

9-10 still work as it’s all variable limits along the stretch. I was offered a speed awareness course last year for 81 when I was caught.
That’s interesting, I would of though they wouldn’t bother doing anyone for 81mph, always though it’s 85+.Do you know what camera flashed you, the one on the side of the gantry (the newer one) or the one overhead above every lane? I have personally never seen the overhead ones flash, where as the ones on the side I see them go off all the time.
Only the HADECs at the side function.
Up to you if you want to chance them not being on when the VSL isn't displayed - I've seen them go off, and driving through any speed camera above the limit seems like playing a stupid game to win a stupid prize.
As for use as average cameras, that's scaremongering IMO - If they were I'd be having porridge for breakfast.
ETA: The grey box cameras also 100% don't work / are off - See above re. porridge

After junction 9 not long before cobham services. It was the ones above the lanes. I always feel like I must be incredibly risk averse when people discuss the speed cameras on the M25; I simply wouldn't bother trying to make any progress on said road.
I know people who drive round at an indicated 85 without triggering them (so an actual 83ish mph in most modern cars), but there's so many cameras that all it would take is a change to the threshold speed and you could lose your licence on one trip, or at the very least need to go to court to try and plead "but my children will starve and my wife will have to go on the game if I lose my licence" (I've never been to court, but I'm assuming that's what people say when going for exceptional hardship). So it's going to be a real ball-ache regardless.

The problem is with the m25, I even had that happen to me today, the gantries changed from 60 to NSL for about 5 seconds before changing to 40mph when I was pretty much in front of the gantry, and all that because you guessed it there was traffic still in front and it hasn’t cleared at all, I suppose that is a mistake of highways England but it makes you wonder how they look at instances like that when issuing tickets, as anyone would as soon as I have seen the NSL Infront of me I have put my foot down to try reach 70mph thinking it’s all clear ahead now when in reality it wasn’t.I know people who drive round at an indicated 85 without triggering them (so an actual 83ish mph in most modern cars), but there's so many cameras that all it would take is a change to the threshold speed and you could lose your licence on one trip, or at the very least need to go to court to try and plead "but my children will starve and my wife will have to go on the game if I lose my licence" (I've never been to court, but I'm assuming that's what people say when going for exceptional hardship). I’m not too sure how the cameras work in instances like that but I suppose the normal grace period still applies even though the NSL was applied by a mistake for about 5 seconds. Either way I have passed the camera at 48mph or so because you just can’t slow down in time. I never seen any flash but like I said it makes you wonder.
I would definitely contest the ticket if anything was to come through but as of yet I’m not too worried about it, and I can understand that mistakes to happen, but we shouldn’t really be punished for them.
It can get very stressful driving M25 now.

That Western section of the M25 anywhere between J10 and J13 is a total nightmare IME.
I can join it at J12 from the M3 and regardless of the time of day there is always a reduced speed limit and a stop/start queue.
So I don't bother any more, I just head for the A3 because Motorways in the South East are no longer "fit for purpose".
