Long story short. I’m in Edinburgh overnight friday. On Saturday, I was planning a day trip. However, I am now able to devote two days.

So what would you suggest - I’m willing to drive a few hours and then stay the night.

I would need to on Sunday drive down to Manchester.

One option was to stay around Balmoral and the other even five up to John O Groats but I’m told it’s grotty. Any suggestions? For completeness, I’m in Edinburgh from Tuesday for various things.

Head west. You should be able to get to Fort William/Tyndrum area from Edinburgh. Then Sunday drive down the other side of Loch lomond past Glasgow and down to Manchester.

I’d be looking at heading up to Loch Tay, maybe a stop in Stirling for the monuments and castle. Overnight at the hotel in Kenmore or nearer to Killin for the Falls of Dochart. A827 to Aberfeldy, Dewars distillery or a kayaking taster at Beyond Adventure just over the road from the distillery.

Thanks, would Stirling Castle and Balmoral be possible in one day ending with a night at Aviemore and then onwards to Loch Ness and Inverness the next day?

No chance if you actually want a look around inside the castles.
Edinburgh- stirling 1hr ish driving
Stirling castle 2 +hours
Stirling- balmoral 2 hours+ driving
Balmoral 2+hours
Balmoral - aviemore 1.5 hours

Your next day to Inverness and loch ness is mofe than doable but it will leave you a long drive from home

Thanks all. Plan will be confirmed this weekend.

As an aide for a day trip from Edinburgh, to Loch Lomand, would you recommend going via Glasgow on the M8 and then the A83 or the M9 via Sterling and then the A811?

A811 everytime. Also consider the loop Stirling - A84 via Callander - A85 to Crainlarich (can pop down to Killen) - A82 Loch Lomond down to Balloch and then A811 back to Stirling. Although be prepared for bumper to bumper slow moving traffic on some stretches at this time of year.
