I’m in Edinburgh next month with two 11 year boys . Any suggestions for a day trip? Ideally, to get to a place we can walk - like a castle, a loch or even an outdoor place like a theme park, but must include good food and magic scenery doable - ideally - in a day trip.

If you like bridges - North Queensferry. It’s a nice old village under the Forth Bridge on the north shore. It’s possible to get there by train across the Forth Bridge or drive across the Queensferry Crossing. You can also have a walk on the Forth Road Bridge. I’d also recommend Rankin’s Cafe and Deli for a bite. There is also Deep Sea World, never visited though. North Queensferry is great for exploring all of this and taking photos.

I would also recommend visiting The Kelpies, just off the M9 and Falkirk Wheel. In fact, why not do all three?

Just a short drive East of Edinburgh how about these?

Visit Concorde here https://www.nms.ac.uk/flight

Great day out for kids with lots to do http://www.eastlinks.co.uk

Or this little gem https://www.myretonmotormuseum.co.uk

Then along to North Berwick for some lovely fish and chips and amazing ice cream here https://alandas.co.uk/gelato/, nice beach and views looking over to the Bass rock.

I just came on to mention the first and third, both well worth a visit, to which I'll add the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Just check in advance in the castles - they were shut a week ago due to finding lose masonry.

Not sure about the appeal for a couple of 11 year olds.

Linlithgow.
Palace, loch, pubs, cafes, quirky shops all in the centre.

Falkirk Wheel is quite interesting, as is Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument and Bannockburn.

Oh I don't know, there's quite a good story about an apprentice being murdered by the master mason there, they'd lap it up. Or maybe not.

Just don’t head to the Highlands. It’s a longish drive and there’s plenty to see and do in The Borders, East Lothian and Fife which are on the doorstep.
