Does anyone on here know where I can see a chart showing the height elevation along the length of the M6? I seem to spend a lot of time on it and thought it would be interesting and informative. Something like this, but for the M6, showing places or junctions or something!

Cheers!

You could use the OS MAPS app

https://www.plotaroute.com seems to do a relatively good job (mainly used it for cycle/walk routes but there's a follow road option. Don't just click the start and end and let it work out inbetween. For some reason it knows best, and sometimes thinks going through the middle of a town is a better idea than following the road/path around the town.

Because thats how you would walk or be able to cycle. You would drive round the outskirts but cycle or walk straight through the centre.

Doesn't Strada do something like that to show climbs and descents ? Not sure if it will let you plot a route along the motorway though.

Near me, on the stretch between Standish and Chorley heading North you can see across the Lancashire plain out towards Southport.
Then from the viewing platform at Forton services you have wonderful far reaching vistas.

Install Google Earth Pro, open the "measure" tool (ruler), select path, tick "show elevation profile" and click points along the stretch of M6 you're interested in.

The web version doesn't seem to have that feature.

(OK for short stretches, a bit tedious for all of it). Example:

Ian Lancs suggested trying planaroute (thanks!) - and, after a bit of trying, it's done a reasonable job. I'm still working on getting labels onto the image but it's a promising start!

We could take bets on what's the low point.

The stretch from jnct 8-10 is pretty dismal. wink

According to the OS Landranger map, that sign is lying. a) the summit is not on the motorway but some hundreds of metres to the left and b) the highest point shown is 317 metres = 1040 feet.

confused The motorway isn't professing to be the high point, which is obviously that higher bit past the sign. It's a sign which is saying "this is the summit of this motorway, at shap".
