A friend who is a TV producer posted a request on Facebook to see if any of her friends were professional drivers, and after some prodding she's revealed that she's looking for help finding a suitable filming location in the UK. I suggested that I might post on PH as I'm sure there would be plenty of folks here who might know.

Her requirements are and I quote:

"it's basically suggestions for a stretch of road that fits several criteria - must have a city backdrop (lights etc.), must have room to over/undertake (i.e. dual carriageway), can't be too busy (no London), need somewhere to come off and turn around (so a roundabout or exit slipway to one) so that we don't have to drive for miles to turn around and do another take... etc."

Can anyone think of a suitable road? Had it not been for the London exclusion, I might have suggested the A40 elevated section. I don't know whether the city lights need to be in the distance or whether the road can be located in the city. If I can get more info I'll post back.

Milton Keynes and the A5/A509 are good candidates based off of that

ETA - Both have good elevation heading away from the city. I'll be driving one shortly if they want some dashcam footage of the view

M32 into Bristol, Southern end.
A370 flyover heading South out of Bristol, near Ashton Gate.

I know you said no London, but the A1020 around London city airport is dead even during rush hour. It used to be a popular Street racing haunt as it was so dead around there with good straights and loads of roundabouts to turn back on.

Thinking about it, despite it being 'city' the city is fairly off in the distance, you could go banging up and down Connaught bridge all day without anyone bothering you though. We need a definition of city, is it traffic lights and shops or big shiny lit up buildings in the distance?

Coventry Ring road?

Elevated, plenty of city lights, lots of places to come off and turn around or just keep driving and you are back where you were in no time.

I've passed all of the suggestions so far on and my friend is very appreciative, and so am I. Thank you!

A232 around Croydon - used loads in The Bill. The A4 through central Slough is also an option, but backdrop is an issue as it's Slough.

Roads around Teesside. The A19 and Tees Flyover, with lots of industrial ness, and A66 that cuts through the middle of Middlesbrough. Then there’s the A174 near Redcar. The A1085 Trunk Road on the other side near the closed Steelworks. Certainly a lot around to pick from.

There's lots of quiet roads around NEC in Brum. Especially now.

And mine, where you come off from the Hilton must be dead past midnight at the moment. Miss a take, easy enough with the block system to get back to where needed.

Straight off the bat I'd say the elevated sections of the M6 north of Birmingham, or the M5 between junctions 1 and 2.

Or the M96.

Road to nowhere is a good suggestion, but there's no urban backdrop. I've walked along that, it's fascinating. It's exactly what I would expect in 20 years if humans disappeared, or the 'rona wiped us all out. Sort of half expected a small camp of mutant humanoids, ravaged and deformed through exposure to radiation from the fallout, to come screaming out of the bushes in search of tinned food. Precious, uncontaminated tinned food. Free of artificial preservatives, colourings and strontium-90.

What exactly is being filmed, and for how long will the cameras be rolling, as the M96 isn't that long.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have absolutely no idea what's being filmed. I'm guessing it's something like the Blinding Lights video by The Weeknd, but I do love RoyalJordanian's old A4 Flyover video featuring Christopher Cross' Sailing:

Go into Yate. It’s exactly like that smile
