Chaps!

I’d normally head across to north wales but nowadays that doesn’t seem like an option.

Heading out in the next few days. Thinking Yorkshire dales or Lake District.

Can anyone suggest well sighted, quiet roads to build into my route?

Thanks!

Rick.

Were are you starting/ finishing? Loads of roads through the dales national park A684 going from M1 across to the M6 and loads of roads off it to extend you route, via Ribblehead viaduct etc. Carry on and it takes you to Kendal were you could start a number of circular routes round the Lake District , I’m not to clued up on the lakes roads though tbf.

Try this for a day in the Lakes, starts and finishes in Penrith and takes in the Lakeland Car Museum as well as some iconic passes.

Let me know where you wish to start and finish in the Dales

Am preparing a road trip too in the Dales and Pennines in June (hopefully....). And so far, based on forums and recommendations...:
- Lake District = for the scenery rather than the "driving" roads (as it will likely be busy + many passes roads are narrow)
- Pennines = for the driving roads: Edmundbyers > Stanhope > Eggleston / Alston > Hexham / etc.

I’ll be honest with you, if you expect to push on in the Lakes forget it, even in winter the roads are busy nowadays. I tend to drive them early morning pre 8am and you can enjoy them just have to be well aware of cyclist and sheep!

What I suggest is you spend time in the dales, Pennines and Northumbria. If you message me I’m happy to go through some great roads.

100%

The Lakes are lovely to look at and walk in but not to drive in - Corney Fell road is interesting in the right car but other than that you will fail to make any progress.

North Pennines is where it's at!

I cycled in the Lakes last summer. I'd avoid Hardkott and Wrynose in a car, constant queues and cars backing up on the road between Ambleside and the foot of Wrynose. Hardly any passing places and very thin

Nice when you're up there though

The Honister pass is beautiful. I’ve been through a few times this winter and it’s been quiet. Different story on a warm summer weekend.

I'd avoid Hardkott and Wrynose in a car, - I USED TO LOVE BOTH OF THESE - USUALLY TAKEN AFTER MIDNIGHT IN A RALLY CAR

I do agree that there are awesome almost empty roads to the east of the M6.

I had to go out for some milk & bread at the weekend. I "got a bit lost" but found myself going up the A684 from Catterick then from Hawes to Thwaite up the Buttertubs Pass then back east past the Tan Hill pub. A few ramblers about but mostly empty roads. Buttertubs was stunning scenery but I'm not sure what all the fuss is about regarding the quality of the driving road. Lots of wider faster flowing roads in the Dales.

For the Lakes I really enjoy Keswick to Borrowdale, over the Honister Pass and along Buttermere. For most of it you won't do more than 30mph but the corners have a great flow, lots of crests and dips with some decent straights where you can overtake the odd bus etc. I'd suggest to head out at sunrise or at least well before 8:00 in summer, you should be alone then. Autumn is a much better time of year though especially after the October half term - I usually go in the first week of November when the autumn colours are often at their best. It's far quieter then, but if you're out at peak times you're always going to find the dawdlers.

Hawes - Thwaite - Richmond is nice in the Dales.

...and come back via the little known Newlands pass
