Hi all,

I am picking up a new M340i from BMW Park Lane next month and driving home to Glasgow.

I'm keen to minimise motorway driving and am thinking of taking a couple of days to take a nicer route home.

So far I'm thinking Peak District>Dales>Pennines>Kielder and home from there.

I'm struggling to find a route out of London/South East that looks appealing. Does anyone have any suggestions or do I just need to bite the bullet and M1 it for a hundred or so miles?

Cheers!

You could head across to Oxford via the M40 and then cross-country to Worcester, Shrewsbury etc then north to Manchester. Then through the lake district.

Or, again, head to Oxford but go up to Leamington Spa, Burton upon Trent and then across the Peak District and head past the east of Manchester.

You couid just head due North up the A5 (Edgware Road, straight across the Marble Arch roundabout is the A5), then cut across to the East at Lichfield on the A38, A52 North to Ashbourne, A515 to Buxton, A6 to Manchester and carry on North...

I'm heading up from Glasgow from the south east next week and will probably stick with the A1 then cut across the Pennines. Hopefully that will mean I will avoid any congestion on the M1 or the M40 around Birmingham.

I usually like to use the A1 and cut across the A66. The dualled bits and scenery make up for the HGV dominated shorter bits of SC, which are thankfully quite short following the last spurt of upgrades.

PS it might be worth checking out whether any routes you plan to drive on are like to be surface dressed over the next couple of weeks. Nothing more annoying I can imagine than ploughing through loose chippings in a new car.

https://one.network/ is good for finding out where local councils are about to vandalise their roads, and the cars that use them.

Thanks for the ideas and advice folks. Particularly the road works, didn't think of that!
