I'll be driving between Bristol and Tenby (both directions). Is there a route that'll break up the boredom of the M4 and take me through the highlights of the Black Mountains?

Off at Chepstow then west on the B4235

North on the B4560 from Garnlydan to Llangynidr

South on the A470 then right onto the A4059

North on the A4069 from Brynamman then North East to Trecastle

From Trecastle north to Tirabad (military road do not always open) and continue to Garth, west to Beulah then further west to Abergwesyn and beyond, before heading south past Llyn Brianne

That route will take a LOT more time to get there but it’ll be worth it even if the weather is poor. If the weather’s good it’ll be superb, and you’ve got the luxury of taking in parts on the way there and back.

I was on the Abergwesyn road a couple of weeks ago. Went up past Llyn Brianne from Llandovery and turned right onto the Abergwesyn road, down the Devil’s Staircase to Llanwrtyd Wells then home vis Carmarthen. Only downside was the road repairs. Chippings flying everywhere as the nobs speed through.
