Plan B if Timmelsjoch is not open in time
Discussion
I'm driving to Italy in the middle of August and am planning to go via Austria and over the Timmelsjoch. However, it is not currently open due to a landslide, and the opening date has recently slipped from middle of July to end of July, so I have to be prepared for it to slip again.
The start and end points for this particular day are Fussen in Germany, and Salo, Lake Garda, Italy. It's about 6 hours, so a nice days drive allowing for a few stops to look at stuff and a nice leisurely lunch.
Looking at the map, the two immediately obvious alternatives are the Brenner pass to the east, and a road to the west that looks like alot of tunnel and not very interesting. The goal is much more about scenery and top down cruising than it is about taking hairpin bends at full throttle.
Any recommendations for alternatives to the Timmelsjoch?
