Not sure if anyone has done this trip before, but looking to drive from Athens to Lefkada in a small hire car and save as much money on fuel as possible.

The three options are either:
a) take the shortest route via toll roads along the Corinth - Patras tollway and then across the bridge and up (4h:30 - €34 in tolls)
b) take a longer road with cheaper tolls via Delphi-ish (7hrs - €15 in tolls)
c) completely avoid all toll roads (8h:30 - €0 in tolls)

I'm just wondering whether any toll costs will be offset in saved fuel being able to just cruise along at 100km/h or so in 5th gear, rather than winding through narrow mountain roads hammering the accelerator.

And then to top it all off, I'm wondering if actually it would be better to just sod it and drive the scenic way just to experience the mountain roads in the first place!

Any suggestions?

Make the journey part of the experience - go scenic.

Go scenic, it's only money.

If you had to choose one of the 3 described routes, I'd say the shortest one. At 100km/h, you'd be travelling an extra 250 and 400 kilometers respectively. I'd say you'd spend more than 34 euros on the extra fuel, stops, food etc.
