I was considering the Black Forest High Road, but after reading a few comments and given the timing is August Bank Holiday weekend I figured it probably wasn't a good idea. So now I'm looking at the German Alpine Road - it looks good, but does anyone have any comments on how busy or where to stay. I'm thinking of staying a couple of nights somewhere about halfway. This would be part of a much longer road trip, so I'm only looking at 2, possibly 3 nights.

We did this in June 2012, which was at the very start of the season so it was pretty quiet. Like you, it was part of a longer road trip on the way back from Transylvania.

We spent 3 nights between Berchtesgarten and Lindau, which gave us enough time to stop whenever we saw something interesting. I'll try to work out where we stayed.

If you're talking about the Alpenstrasse, I found it boring as a driver's road, more so because it was clogged with traffic.

I'd make sure any bookings you make have free cancellation in case this isn't all over by then. Our 2 1/2 week tour in June/July is off for now with everything cancelled. Will see how things are in Sept.

Yes - I totally get that.

Everything that is already in place was booked long before this situation was even a remote possibility in my mind. I've got a week booked in a villa in Tuscany, and 3 nights at a hotel in Lake Como. Credit card used to secure the hotel booking, but no money taken and can be cancelled without penalty up to 8 days before booking. 30% deposit paid for the Villa, but the UK based travel company are reputable and I have zero concerns about how they will handle any problems.

For the rest of it, I am just carrying on with the planning but not going to do any actual booking until I am confident that we will be able to go.

The bit of the trip that's still open it the return leg from lake Como to the UK. We could just do foot down and head for the channel, but I do quite like the look of the Alpine Road - not so much as a driving road, more for the scenery and general ambience. I know it actually takes me further away from Calais, but I don't mind that.

I hope you are able to take your trip.

Possible alternative route home is north from Lake Como, making a detour a little east via Davos, nice bit of scenic mountain driving with moderate traffic in my experience.
