Good driving roads near Dover
Discussion
Hi all. I've unfortunately moved away from the wonderful vicinity of the Ashdown forest and a264 to Dover. I don't mind driving half an hour to get to some half decent driving roads. A mixture of well sighted straights and complex twisty stuff would be nice.
Any recommendations? I'm near Connaught park if anybody knows it.
Of course this will be for my enjoyment post lockdown
Of course I'm familiar with Eastbourne beachy head loop but looking for roads more local.

Welcome to East Kent mate.
You will need to travel a little for the best roads (such as they are compared to Ashdown Forest)
I will post up some google map links.

Thanks mate, yeah I thought that may be the case. They look like a good start. Of course there are so many good roads to the West around Rye etc.
I drove this loop in dark blue the other day (was out for work anyway). but nowhere near enough fun. Stone St is a long well sighted road. but before and after that is mostly poor roads where you can't really have fun. Crete rd west was a nice unexpected surprise though, giving a brilliant panoramic view over Folkestone and the channel tunnel. But the road itself is mostly single track and full of dips and hazards.

Sure, Stone Street you can pick up a fair lick, but there are side turning, driveways, and more 50mph limits on it. And also much of it is dead straight..
Even so I had a very near miss on Stone street where a yellow beetle cabriolet pulled right out in front of oncoming cars..they missed him by a whisker.if they hadn't he would have been push right into my path..even so I thought I would run into the back of him... I was thankful for four pot caliper brakes. I caught up with the guy at the traffic lights in Canterbury...he was doped up.
Those routes I gave you are about the best you'll get in South East Kent. The place is busy and many roads that once were quiet and fast now have new developments and more restrictions.
Denton to Hawkinge is a quick road..but you have to find the right time because it's a main drag.
Alkham valley is spoiled by speed restrictions, as is the Dover to Walmer rd.

All over the old Kent coalfield is lovely countryside with plenty of pubs etc. From Ringwould, Nonnington, Chillenden and Goodnestone etc... they are not fast roads , but make a pleasant drive out..if your in pottering mode, it's a very pretty area, as are the downs around Wye, Challock Godmersham and Crundale and Petham...again they mostly are lanes/roads with restricted sight lines..but beautiful countryside to explore nonetheless. Most of the best driving roads are on those routes I gave you.
Thanks mate appreciate it. Yes I'm not one for driving stupidly fast on the road anyway, stuck to the speed limit on stone st and took in the scenery and sounds. As you say it's far too easy for something to happen out of our control on a road like that. I do enjoy scenic drives where the speed limit is enough. Cheers!
Ever since the M20 was completed between Dover and Maidstone many years ago, the old A20 has become a lot quieter and has some nice bits to drive. If you fancy an out and return, turning left at the roundabout just before you get to Charing, and heading towards Canterbury via Challock and Chilham is also a nice drive.
The Alkham valley road that runs from Temple Ewell towards Folkestone is also quite a nice drive and usually not too busy.
The old Dover to Sandwich road was also good but I am not sure how much remains or was incorporated in to the new bypass. The Dover to Deal road was also fun on a bike, but I believe there have been a few speed reductions put on that road backed up by cameras.

For best results leave home early doors and miss all the traffic.
Aim to finish in time for breakfast.

Absolutely brilliant, brilliant drive, with a great mix of well sighted roads and twisty stuff. I'd go as far as to say one of my favourite drives in a long time.
Look forward to seeing you soon mate.
