Just wondering if any of you Peak District regulars out there have a view as to whether the

“Cat & Fiddle - Highwayman - Long Hill Triangle”
aka A537 - B5470 - A5004
aka Buxton - Macc - Whaley Bridge - Buxton

is best done in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction? I will be starting from Buxton.

While you are at it, is Snake Pass better East-West or West-East?

Many thanks!

The road from Buxton to Whaley is a far more rewarding and better sighted drive when started in Buxton. The C+A is better done from Macc to Buxton, cutting out the middle section by dropping down to the Bottom of the Oven (Wildboarclough) and blasting up the hill towards the pub. The cameras do not work BTW. Therefore go Macc - BX - Whaley - Macc. Or the other way. smile

Snake isn't very good in either direction IMO, but if you must then when doing West - East turn left and go over Holme Moss, then South out of Holmfirth - deserted roads and some traditional country pubs can be found.

I honestly wouldnt bother with the Buxton/Long Hill route as it has a gazillion average speed cameras

If I was ever on Mastermind Id have the Snake as my specialist subject
It is definitely better from Ladybower to Glossop if you get up early
Get up late and its completely polluted with 40mph dash cam warriors travelling in convoy

The climb from Glossop is open and most bends have good visibility
Its fun but you are travelling that much faster with less margin for error

From Ladybower its much narrower with a lot more low speed corners encouraging one to step on it/open the taps/give the old girl her head - Ive never had a Jaaag but imagine this is how Id talk if I ever did it in an E or F type, which would be a lot of fun

Cheers
