Turkey Roads and Syria

This spring we're off again and going to be travelling by car through Turkey.
Any good roads to drive or bad ones to avoid? Safety tips?
Also I want to look over the border, from a safe distance into Syria. Any suggestions apart from you must be crazy!

Around Istanbul there is Uçmakdere, the Belgrade Forest and Garipçe. All on the European side of Istanbul.

I am looking forward to more suggestions as I am living here and would love to know of more good driving roads.
