Hardknott Pass - Cumbria
Discussion
On Monday my girlfriend and I set off to Cumbria for a few days. Plan was to go to as many rude place names as possible, but we managed just Cockermouth where we were staying.
We did a few tourist things, boat around a lake where some of Star Wars was filmed. Drove to Edinburgh for the day. I was more looking forward to finding some nice roads to drive down.
Getting there was mostly motorways as we wanted to get there quickly.
But a few photos from the trip! Think I have the road names right!
Cockermouth
A701 (or maybe 702)
Hardknott Pass
I do have some others but phone is playing up!
1,500 miles since Monday. Hardknot Pass was my favourite for views. My girlfriend wasn't impressed with the road mind you!

Sounds like you had a good night then. When I lived in Whitehaven (stehaven) Cock(in)her mouth was usually referred to as KnobaGob.And don't talk to me about Hardknott Pass. Piles I have had from staying in the saddle biking over there put the Windscale ones to shame. On a 1993 mountain bike, before V and disc brakes on the 1 in 3 descent to Eskdale, your arse was off the back of the bike on the rear tyre to prevent you going head over handlebars.
Did you visit Jilly's Snatch near Threkeld, an old mining drain.
You were probably quite close to Great Cockup (a hill to the east of Basenthwaite near Keswick)!
The A701 is a great road, certainly the first part as you climb out of Moffat and then descend down the long wide valley. An alternative route from north Lakes to Edinburgh (but longer time-wise) is the A686 through Alston, which has to be one of the best roads in the country, and then up the A68.

Hardknott/Wrynose pass probably one of the most challenging drives in the England.
I must admit I struggle to see the excitement. Of course the scenery is amazing (on the three days a year you can see it through the rain) but as a drive ? It is a steep , narrow and fiddly drive and any modern car should do it with ease . It'd have been fun in my old 2CV though ...Gassing Station | Roads | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
