Based ourselves in Inverness, up decent hour on Saturday and headed cross country to applecross then only as far up as gairloch I think it was. 22-25degrees, sun splitting the almost deserted roads. Wow, what a beautiful country i live in. Had done the whole route previously but this time just wanted to show my Mrs applecross. Recommended!!

We're heading that way sometime next summer, what's the midge count like at this time of the year?

Never experienced any, think the hot, dry heat scared them off perhaps? We were not out of car much to be fair, only to take pics and eat!!

Midgies only come out in the summer, so this time of year is their time of year.

But the density of them can vary during the summer months, there is talk of a possible later third hatch of them this year due to the warm and wet weather this year. They normally have two hatches per year, one end of May or early June and second one end of July or August. There may be a third one towards the end of this August.

Wind (even just a breeze) and sun can keep them from annoying you. Only females bite, they vary across areas both in density and depending on whether they are more active in morning, daytime or evening.

A very cold winter can kill them off to an extent.

They've not been bad for me this year, only really an issue on a couple of occasions.

I feel a real wimp for asking but anything that stings or bites has always made a beeline for me. Hopefully it will be May rather than high summer when we head that way so will escape the worst of them. Unlike this year's LeJoG trip when we were driving more or less non-stop, next year we'll do more sightseeing so will be out of the car a lot, hence the question - I like to be prepared for all eventualities.

I think I'm right in saying that Avon 'Skin So Soft' appears to have anti-midge properties, but I can't remember where I heard that!

Avon Skin So Soft has Citronella in it, which has been used as an insect repellent. There were daft stories doing the rounds that it was so effective that the SAS used it, which is plainly bks as you can smell it from a long way off, and no self-respecting SAS trooper would use it (not if he wanted to live much longer).

The current weapon of choice is Smidge, available at most outdoorsie places and online.

I did the NC500 back in Aug 2017 and those midges assaulted my balding head. I remember having to abandon a re-fuel and run into the station's shop to get a away from them lolz

August is the worst month - but today is windy, so we won't see any. Yesterday was sunny, so we didn't see any. Tomorrow will be still and damp, so we'll stay indoors!

It looks likely it'll be May so we should be safe. BTW - thanks for your route advice from Glasgow in the other thread.

It was the Royal Marines that we’re using it in Scotland, which is far more plausible
