Best Roads In Scotland?

What are some of the better roads or routes to drive in scotland?

preferably leaving from the Glasgow area

Head north via Glencoe, the A82 after Fort William is forgettable and an all round poor road, at Fort Augustus take the east road (B862) up past Loch Ness then north of Inverness it's heaven esp. A835/A832. The obvious choice is the NC500 but after Tongue (clockwise) the eastern section is poor so I would miss that section out. Road to Summer Isles, Skye, Lewis/Harris all excellent roads. You've missed the best time of year though, it's all motorhomes and midges now!

You are spoiled for choice . Obviously , the far north west is utterly majestic, and I've been enjoying it for nearly 40 years. As it has become bucket list fodder for some of our more idiotic fellow drivers , there are plenty of other sublime drives. I have discovered them all for myself , armed with only time and a map -forget sat nav , analogue is far better when it comes to the aimless drive .

I suggest you do the same but as as a starter for ten , about 400 yards after you cross the border at Carter Bar on the A68 , turn left , and head west. ... I will say no more

A large scale road atlas is a far better tool than a sat nav for exploring.

I'm quite happy for the bucket list brigade to stick to the NC500. It keeps them away from the other fun stuff.
Going out of the main tourist season helps if/when you do need to use any of the roads on the route.

ISWYM. I've just been watching a video of the opposite direction from Hawick.
My usual route is via Kielder then the B6357 so only use it for just over one mile.

Just back from west coast, stayed on east in Inverness and drove across to applecross. Deserted roads, incredible weather, no midgies, could not have asked for better. Another great road is to come off of a9 at granton on spey and follow tomintoul, cockbridge, lecht, braemar, glenshee to blairgowrie.

Head south from Glasgow if you want decent driving roads that aren’t several hours drive away and also very quiet. Some are even pretty scenic too. Strathaven to Muirkirk is pretty decent to drive. The roads around Crawfordjohn, Sanquhar, Leadhills are brilliant to drive. Twisty but pretty open sighted.
Then you also have the roads on the other side of the M6 e.g. Moffat to Selkirk etc.

Typo? The A9 doesn't go anywhere near Grantown-on-Spey.
It's 12 miles via the shortest route - A938/A95 - to reach the A939.

This route is a little longer but much more entertaining.
An added bonus is none of these pesky things!

Edinburgh to Moffat, or vice-versa, isn't too shabby either.
Try descending the Devil's Beef Tub without touching the brakes.

Granton on spey/boat of garten turn off, gos about 12 miles off a9 if memory serves
