Afternoon all, I did a euro trip down to Italy and back last year, am now umming and urring about doing the same to Spain, but instead of driving through endless French motorways get a ferry direct to Spain and start touring around from there (probably into Bilbao).

Any advice on great driving roads would be much appreciated! I have googled it, got a few ideas, but any nuggets that you have please do let me know. Probably heading over there next year, will most likely be 4 cars.

I cant give you exact road numbers but there were some lovely roads through the middle of the Pyrenees when we went from france into spain via the middle of the Pyrenees last year.

Nice gentle country roads with hardly any other cars in site.

Yep the Pyrenees are really good. The roads are empty compared to the Alps. The boat is ok too, you get off nice and rested ready to go. We did along the coast up to San Sebastian (dropping in at Dragonstone along the way if you are into GoT), Biarittiz, then along the french side of the alps all the way to Besalu which is lovely and then back along the Spanish side. That took us two weeks to do however. Of note is that it is cheaper in Spain to eat etc. There is a really good animal park half an hour away from the port at Santander too if you can manage it.

Spain has some epic roads, especially in the Pyrenees/Barcelona area. Here are a few..

C-462 from Solsona turning right onto the LV-4241 towards Berga.

If you land at Santander you are just minutes away from the Picos de Europa. Perfect driving roads and Basque food.

If I had to make a choice ..... Pyrenees (Spanish side) or Picos de Europe, it would be the former every time as there’s more roads to travel. That’s not saying that the latter ain’t great though.
