Hi All,

I'm heading up to the Yorkshire Dales with some friends this weekend for a bit of a driving weekend. Looking for some suggestions for fun roads. I've done some googling and have found a few already but always up for more ideas as we are there for 3 days we have time to explore!

Don't expect to enjoy the roads as much as their location suggests unless you like getting up very early . Most are infested with motorhomes.tractors and loony tune bikers.. I live between the Dales and the North York Moors and my driving preference is much further north - between rural Durham (Barnard Castle , say ) and Scots border is driving heaven .

A6108 Ripon to Leyburn
A684 Leyburn to Hawes
B6255 Hawes to Ribblehead Viaduct
B6479 Ribblehead to Settle

There’s my favourites. Stay inside those and they’re mostly good although some are narrow. As above though you won’t get to enjoy much in a car on a weekend due to the amount of ditherers.

Mine too. Take the B6276 north from Brough and you've found the best roads in England - but don't tell anyone...

If you’re coming up via the m6 take a detour at Preston and go through the forest of bowland. Properly quiet and some great roads and scenery. Depending on what route through you take, it spits you out either at ingleton or settle. From there both can take you to the ribblehead viaduct. From there to hawes - b6255 is possibly my favourite stretch of road if you time it right. Then you can pick up the buttertubs pass to thwaite, and the tan hill pub

Then B6277 to Alston, then A686 to Melmerby, did someone say the further north you go the better the roads biggrin

It’s a great road. There’s a fairly savage bump on it when it gets twisty up on the top of the hill which I usually fail to remember and always bottom the car out!
The Hartside Pass is fun too.

Yes to all of that. In and around those roads has been my stomping ground over the past 20 years or so and I've never noticed an undue amount of traffic.

If you have the time and the inclination, switch the sat nav off and just enjoy getting completely lost, taking which ever road the traffic/fancy takes you (assuming you like tight and twisty over long and sweepy). You're in pretty much the narrowest part of the country so you really can't get it spectacularly wrong!

Some really good suggestions here. However, a note of caution. North Yorkshire police’s revenue vans also enjoy these roads on a regular basis.
