UK: Speed table (raised junction)
Discussion
Hi, I live in Greater London, somewhere in Bromley.
On my road, there are humps and speed tables at junctions (2 roads intersect perpendicularly). The humps are awful, but nowhere near as bad as the speed tables.
I attempted to measure the height of the table, but I couldn't - they matched the height with the curb. Standing outside measuring the nearby curb, I can confirm that it is indeed higher than 100mm.
Here comes the problem: the incline on the ramps is far too steep. I have a Toyota IQ (a city car), completely stock. Granted, my car isn't the best at dampening vibrations, I can still feel a considerable drop, and it's far from a sports car. I've heard 4x4s go over these humps, and although look fine, the noise the suspension makes from the sudden compression is almost painful to hear. I really think this could damage any car from any unfamiliar driver.
I'm familiar with these roads, as they're the same ones I live on. I feel this is particularly dangerous, as, at the approach and exit to a junction, I have to be going around 5mph (maybe less) if I don't want my car to rock, which is, of course, the speed I go over.
At those speeds, it's dangerous, as people get confused who's letting who go on the junction.
I believe a car such as an M5 will scrape.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not necessarily hating on speed humps - I actually really enjoy rolling over nicely shaped humps - there's something satisfying to it. Also, I have 3 schools on the same road (fml), and it'd be stupid not to put humps there. My problem really is the elevation of the humps. I feel every driver on this road would appreciate lower humps.
I know that the max height for humps are 100mm, but is that the same for speed tables? I don't know the chance of getting the humps redone, but I'm sure at the very least, everyone will appreciate lengthening the ramps by 2 or 3 times longer. What makes things worse, is that these humps have been resurfaced at least 3 times, one of the times being to make them lower (with bumpy ridge things on the edge to lessen the impact). 2 steps forward, 1 step backwards eh?
What are your thoughts?
