Mate and I are planning to do a weekend roadtrip at the end of May - I'm thinking either to Scotland or Wales.

Thinking Scotland at the mo - been to Wales a few times but only driven a few of the nice roads and this was en route between rally stages (marshalled at Rally GB).

We're going from Nottingham on a Friday early - thinking Friday to travel up and hopefully get a few decent roads in. Stay over somewhere Friday night then Saturday all day in the cars on some decent roads. Then stay over Sat night and drive back Sunday.

Could we do a brief Scotland trip with only a few days? If so what roads would people recommend bearing in mind the travel to get up there.

Or are we best off doing Wales?

Cheers!

Thinking of staying somewhere near Perth via hopefully some good roads and smashing this road on the Saturday!

It depends how many miles you want to do nd how much of an appetite you have for an early start and empty roads or getting up later and getting stuck in traffic.
No two ways about it that getting into the Grampian is a big drive just getting there. You may be a bit tired to enjoy the roads or if you leave really early on Friday then you could do it but then if you leave early Friday, why not leave really late Thursday and travel through the late night, stop somewhere cheap nd get up early on Friday to enjoy empty rods.
Mid Wales has some awesome roads that I know very well too and you could easily have. Great route around most of WALES in a weekend. In some ways the roads are very big as good as Scotland and if you go early and to the right places you’ll have them to yourself but it is t quite on the scale of epic ness that Scotland is. Although to get to that Scottish epic was you have to travel much much further from Nottingham.
Having said that the Southern Up,ands and border area and Northumberland are fantastic too.

I’m a firm believer that if you get up early nd get the rods to yourself the they are all good

This is a good point - I hadn't thought about leaving Thursday night - good idea!

I'm leaning towards scotland after I saw that YouTube vid of the Old Military Road! I'm thinking we tackle that one on the Saturday and just spend a whole day enjoying it so would be looking for suggestions of good roads to tackle on the Friday i.e. en route to that road...

I’m doing that road myself on my way to Lochinver for a few days.
I’m heading through the Dukes Pass, Trossachs, Kinlochleven Rannoch, Pitlochry onto that road and upto Grantown on Spey. Before heading over to Lochinver.
I’ll be travelling up the night before nd staying near Milton of Campsie.
They are are great roads from the get go
