Hello all,

Am organizing the annual weekend away for my car chums and Yorkshire has been earmarked as the destination.

Will be a Friday till Sunday jaunt with most people travelling up from the South on the Thursday night.

Can anyone recommend some routes for the long weekend? Will have about 10 cars with me. Everyone quite happy to camp so any recommendations for sites would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

from the south...start in Derbyshire.

A6 Matlock through bakewell up to Chapel-En-Le-Frith
Sheffield Road through castleton to Bamford
Bamford A6103 up past ladybower to the A57 over to Glossop

Once in Glossop you can head back over the woodhead pass and then turn left towards holmfirth but I would instead go up to past mossley to greenfields and holmfirth.

When in holmfirth stop at the Carding Shed: http://thecardingshed.co.uk/
Leave holmfirth and head to yummy Yorkshire for an ice cream: https://www.yummyyorkshire.co.uk/

Thats a decent half day to go twice accross the peak district then move up towards West/North Yorkshire with plenty of interesting stop opportunities on the way.

Brilliant, great tips there. Think we may stay around the peaks as some people coming from quite far south. Any other tips for roads in that part of the country?

Not hugely, for me there are 3 main routes over the peaks those are green fields, snake and woodhead. Plenty of smaller roads but they can be a little rough with plenty of bumps so if you’re in anything too stiff they won’t be pleasant.

Loads of good roads in North Yorkshire but I don’t really know the area too well. Might be worth sticking a post in the yorkshire section.

The routes out to Bridlington and Scarborough are good but you’re really going to hit caravans and day trip traffic going that way.

If I was planning a follow on to my first suggestion I’d probably take a steady drive York way ready for next day. York to Bridlington, up the coast by scarborough and whitby then pick back towards Richmond. Completely different scenery to the first day.

Stopping around Richmond gives you the option of a day through the dales.

Yorkshire is a bad choice, unless you're willing to be up and about at crack of dawn. Dales/Moors are generally busy in summer and there are about 15 mobile vans and they are sneaky.

Go a bit further North into North Pennines and enjoy quiet/better roads and less risk of bother.

Sounds interesting, any routes in particular?

We are going late September so I’m hoping things will have quietened down a bit by then!

Look around accomodation Middleton in Teesdale, and routes up around Stanhope and up to Edmundbyers and beyond. Deserted roads, better sighting, less bother. You have roads all over there up to and beyond Scottish borders, with no company. The Dales/Moors (though less so) are hemmed in by comparison.

Agree with the comments above - great roads in the Peak District but unless you get up at the crack of dawn it's impossible to properly enjoy them. I left home at 6:30am on Easter Sunday, did 110 miles and by the time I was heading back home the hoards of day-trippers were on their way to clog up the roads I'd just been enjoying. From my limited experience of the North Pennines the roads are quieter during daylight hours - fewer large towns and tourist traps being the main reason.

Avoid Dales (ie West ) and Moors(ie North East)unless you are very early risers. Look for the roads less travelled on the Wolds(East ) .Forget the obvious - Buttertubs , ,Blakey Ridge and Tyke TT (B1257 - Stokesley Helmsley) . I live between Dales and Moors and if you want really decent roads keep going north - as said, B6277 is wonderful but my real favourites lie either side of Scots Border.

And don't travel in a convoy as everyone will think you are a bunch of dicks - solo or pairs far better.
