Hi
we are starting to plan our road-trip 2019. Were pretty much novices on the subject and are using Piston Heads as one of our refrences but almost too much good stuff here so appreciate your insights, views and tips or links while we start getting into the weeds of the planning over the coming period.

General idea is a 4 day 4kkm total trip early September from the Netherlands through Germany, Alps, Italy and back through France while covering some of Europe's great drives. Group of 5 cars, not a race but we have sufficient HP to have some fun if need be.

Initial plan is

Day 1 Baden - Hochstrasse Schwarzwald end in switserland
Day 2 Furka and Susten Pass end close to Cannes
Day 3 Route Napoleon and Gorge the Verdon end around Geneva
Day 4/5 tbc

Couple of initial questions I'd like your view on

- what is right/best Hochstrasse route to take
- Can we cover both Furka and Susten and end up in/around Cannes in 1 day
- any tips for roads to take post Route napolean while driving north on the last 2 days appreciated

your help appreciated!
best
JB

That looks far too ambitious to me. Cannes is too far to reach from the Andermatt loop area in a day, without driving from dawn to dusk, without any stops.
We tend to limit days in the mountains to 200-250 miles tops, otherwise you have no time to stop for breaks, lunch, photos, etc.
I think you need to extend your trip, or consider limiting the mileage from what you've stated.

Thanks for that, sounds like we should probably consider cutting day 2 in half

On my first euro trip, we drove from Cannes to Andermatt in a day with a stop at Monaco. Left at 0900 and arrived Andermatt 1800 - far too long a drive. You would never do the passes and get to Cannes in one day unless you like driving that much!

That would be much better. Along with the passes you mention you've also got the Grimsell, Gotthard and Nufenen that are well worth including around Andermatt.

yes 600+ miles a day is too far, you need to allow some time for fuelling and eating, sight seeing, photography, traffic hold ups etc. Personally, I'd opt for a much more relaxed pace, 400 - 450 miles a day; less stress, more chilled.

We stayed at the Best Western Hofgurt Sternen, which is just off the 500 at your waypoint no.2.
