Londons missing motorways
Discussion
If you want to see the unbuilt, part finished, missing junctions etc. Bits of 'after-thought' throughout the whole network, go to http://www.pathetic.org.uk/
If anyone has used the M23 from the M25 to Gatwick - it may have occurred to you that there is an anomaly around this area. If the Gatwick turnoff of the M23 is junction 9, and the intersection of the M25 and the M23 is junction 8 - where are junctions 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1.
The answer is that the M23 must have been originally designed to go into, (or over, or under), London. Fortunately, common sense prevailed as we don't need yet another section of clogged up motorway......
Another anomaly for you.
Why do we have a Royal Navy, a Royal Air Force but not a Royal Army.........??????

The never-built M12 South Woodford-Chelmsford Motorway
It explains the huge gap between the two carriageways of the M11.

Interesting site, that is I flew over this junction, where the M23 was clearly going to go a bit further the other day. All that engineering for nothing...

If it were me I'd extend the motorway on an elevated, 2 lane section, over the train line - at least as far as Purley, but ideally as far as Croydon to link in with the larger road networks there.
Would be fairly cost effective (relatively!) and would mean less leaves/snow on the line for Southern to blame...

Yup and trouble is what do you do with the vehicles when they get into the city.....Would be fairly cost effective (relatively!) and would mean less leaves/snow on the line for Southern to blame...
best doing a park and ride and have the cars external to the city and get folks in and out on public transport.
