Me and some mates are planning to drive to Glasgow over the long weekend it will be a Sat start from Surrey and we will return on Monday (bank holiday)

Google maps show 7 hrs but realistically with 2 breaks what sort of travel time am I looking at?,also what the best time to start on a Saturday morning?,any known traffic spots? a good halfway point to have a meal break etc...

Start as early as possible.

M6 in Birmingham can be heavy and there's roadworks north of Stoke on Trent.

Once you get clear of Manchester, it should be fairly plain sailing to Glasgow.

Stop at Tebay on the M6 - it's nice.

FYI, I always pull off Carlisle North, and just off the junction is an ASDA saves paying motorway fuel rates and they have a restaurant there as well.

As you come off the slip road, keep right, turn right at the lights, over a roundabout next lights turn left, and it's on the left.

Use M6 toll if you can, never busy.

Use the app Waze - you can search fuel stops and it will give you prices and time off route.

Last year prices at ASDA were the same in Aberdeen, Carlisle and Felixstowe. They are usually the cheapest as far as I know.

Full tank from Surrey should get you to Carlisle North, and it's probably less than 2 miles off the M6.

M1 -> A50 (petrol stop, normal prices) -> A500 -> M6. Avoids Birmingham traffic.

Fill up you and your car here: https://www.farmhouseinns.co.uk/locations/cherry-t...

Do the same on the way down. smile

If you do this route, you can leave at 11am and should avoid most traffic. cool

Might be some at the M1/A50 junction but other than that, it was speed limit driving most of the way.

I second Cherry Tree Farm for their carvery, being local and went there recently, it is a very good suggestion.

One thing to bear in mind. Is it the weekend of 11-13 May?

If so, part of the M1 is COMPLETELY closed for roadworks, so that may add travel time as people use the A453 TO avoid it when coming off.

So expect traffic on the road off at j23A, consider coming off before, through Loughborough or taking a parallel route, it's highly likely to be busy.

Haha - it was like that last year. We ended up coming off at J23A and spent about 30 minutes between J23a and J24 for some reason!

Re the carvery, was gutted they don't run venues further south than about Leicester. Well-priced and tasty food.

Or, coming back, stop at next one south, Killington, the view over to the lake and the sailing academy is wonderful.

back from a great trip didn't have the need to re-fuel till I reached Glasgow and vice versa which I thought was good for a 14 year old car!

apart from roadworks on M6 with speed limit of 50 mph and a an accident on the M40 due to which there was a delay of 20 mins it was smooth sailing
