Hi,

Can anyone tell me if the 50mph speed restrictions have been lifted from the M1 northbound leading to J19 for the M6?

I know they used to be miles and miles of them and then it was cut back to just a small section at the end. Yesterday I travelled that way and it was only after I joined the M6 that I realised that I never saw any signs and never really slowed down.

Now I'm completely stressing that I've done something really stupid and somehow driving through it. There was nothing on the gantries and I don't remember anyone going slower than I was but I can't stop thinking that I've messed up!

Zoom in to Jn 19 and click on 'Live Traffic' to see current speed, it looks like 70mph:

Thanks Riley, that's a really handy website!

Just asked my gf to tweet Highways England and it is 70mph controlled by the gantries. biggrin

On Sunday I travelled southbound in the morning which was 50mph, but only to protect the safety of the cones as it looked virtually finished.

Later in the day I went back north which was fully open and 70mph, so I think they're in the process of removing the cones and restrictions. Enjoy it while it lasts though, as 16-13 will be the next stretch to get the SMART treatment - another 3 years of 50mph rolleyes

So in other words, you're in the clear smile

Well, bugger me with a small cactus, I've been trying to find out precisely this for my son, who drove from Heathrow to Sheffield on Sunday. We do this run regularly and he's been flapping about it, like you.

All is well...deep joy...smile

Glad I could help!

Chris, yes I did the journey Southbound on Friday and there were still a few miles of 50mph then. I guess they'll do the whole motorway eventually, although why they insist of coning off and slowing down 20 miles of it at a time is beyond me. Couldn't they just do a mile at a time to minimise disruption!?

There's been speed restrictions along there for so long now and I knew it was only towards the end but I tend to drive on autopilot on longer journey and I couldn't shake the horrible feling that I'd just not noticed :|
