As the Title: New Average speed cameras are being rolled out on the A217 Northbound from Reigate Roundabout to Sutton, Also Speed Limits in sections have been reduced!

It used to be from Reigate Roundabout to Lower Kingswood the Dual carriageway was National Speed limit. this has now been reduced to 40MPH The New Average cameras are bolted one on top of each other covering both lanes to existing Lamp posts!
The first one is as you go around the left corner after Reigate roundabout, slightly hidden from view by the tree canopy. The second camera is just after the Lower Kingswood roundabout by the Mogador turning and so it continues all the way past Tadworth roundabout, Burgh Heath, past Romans International to Sutton.

Getting more and more like "1984" each day frown

There must be a reason: too many crashes? Too much traffic? Locals being disturbed by boy racers at night??

The national speed limit sections of the A217 were removed years ago?

Fortunately I dont have to drive that way much anymore. Fond memories of trying to Vmax my metro on the bit you mention, the M25 roundabout was not fully traffic lighted so you were guaranteed a good exit onto that section.

Nope it's all still 40 mph limits. The cameras went up early this week. Going to be a pain in the bum as this is my route in from Redhill to Kingston for work. Not so bad going home as the traffic levels wouldn't permit much more anyway. Going in at 6am is a pain though, pottering along an empty dual carriageway.

Realistically, it'll probably do me a favour as I've already been pulled over for speeding along there!

I've only just noticed some new cameras on a lamp post near my house ,whilst on foot.

Thanks for the thread FB18 ,i might not have seen them in my car at silly o' clock at night.

I usually ,used to now ,come off the M25 roundabout and give it beans till the next roundabout .

I've used that stretch for years and can't ever recall an accident so its definitely a money making scam.

One of my favourite bits is booting it off the Tadworth roundabout northbound in 2nd up the hill till you back off before the speed camera. After the nightmare of the roadworks for months, now this.....Does this impact the mad mile which is the only bit still 60, until someone sadwk closes that fun too ?

You live in Nork area don't you ?

The last bad one was down your way , an old dear pulled out of Burgh Wood onto 217 and got wiped out by 2 cars racing and

there was fatalities.

I've lived in Banstead for 26 years and there have been a few bad ones over the years.

I'm just up from Drift Bridge now and used to use the A217 a lot when we lived in Kingston 20 years ago and I worked at Gatwick, can't honestly recall seeing anything, nor experienced anyone racing. What I do see consistently is people cruising at limit + 10/15, particularly on the lower section where the police used to hang out regularly near the BP. Never really understood why they hang out on the A240 up to Asda on the dual carriageway with virtually no housing (nor pavements on that side) other than catching people out who haven't noticed it drop to 30 at Drift Bridge, again never seen accidents there.

Supposedly this is due to the residents of Lower Kingswood complaining about speeding motorists coming off the M25. No need for it to run a few miles down the road other than bleeding the public dry. The brief 60mph section is presumably now ruined if it does go to Sutton.

Back from my fact finding mission.

Started up here,near my house.

Cameras facing south down towards

Here.
Then walked northbound to...

Cameras facing north and hidden a little.

By the sign for Banstead crossroads.

I then walked the length of the mad mile section but no more cameras spotted.

I will go the other way all the way to M25 to see positions of others mentioned on OP.

Totally ridiculous. I grew up in Banstead (my parents still live there, but I've moved south a little), but when I started driving in '95 the '217 used to have a proper speed limit in most places. Then then nearly slashed it in half from 70 down to 40 in many places.

I could understand the need for cameras if they had a limit that you could respect (like 50-60 in places) but 40 for a lot of that road is just too slow.

BTW, going back through my facebook feed to remind myself that I posted about it in July last year, so it's been a long time coming linky

I noticed these the other day as well. But they're now on both sides of the road. I haven't been able to see any cameras past the Burgh Heath Shell garage going southbound.

I drove past on Monday night and there were just cameras, driving past tonight, they've added the Average Speed Camera signs on the Northbound carriageway. They've used the cover of installing a new water main to put these up I feel. It's hardly been in any news since 2016 and when I looked online found very little about it.

The A217 from from Sutton to M25 is still free of road works, for now, but the other side is speed limited 20 from Burgh Heath to the mad mile then back to 40 for the traffic lights then 60 at the usual spot until you get to Belmont roundabout.

Most traffic I've seen goes at 30 through the 20 and none of the current GATSO cameras have been re-calibrated for 20.

I'm not quite sure HOW this would work what with all the traffic lights and roundabouts slowing you down. I've heard theres supposed to be a camera at every exit to clock you on and off the road. I really don't know how it'll work though.

The mad mile is still 60. BUT since they've dug it up there's now a spot cleared out on the left in amongst the trees which is perfect for a camera van or radar gun spot.

I've seen one or 2 bad accidents. I know of once fatality, a friends brother was killed there whilst riding home from work. He was going over from Banstead towards Coulsdon at the Banstead crossroads and was flattened by someone running a red. Died in hospital a few hours after being hit.

From a selfish point of view, the A217 is an awesome road to drive FAST and I will miss it.

What I will not miss is the bikers racing up and down it at silly speeds, I reckon they must be doing at least 150+ considering what I can manage in my Golf R, slowing only for the cameras and then speeding up again. I live 0.7 miles (as the crow flies) from A217, my mum lives further down near Tesco superstore and 0.6 miles (as the crow flies) from A217 and you can hear the bikers racing late at night. My in laws live on the Downs and 0.8 miles (as the crow flies) and if the wind is right you can hear it there too. It's probably being done more for that than for safety. Won't stop them though as I've seen 3 of them with no number plates.

Mixed feelings here just wondering when they go live.
